1 killed in Hubballi after violence at Ganesha procession

Hubballi, Sept 14: A 20-year-old youth, who was stabbed during a Ganapati idol immersion procession in Hubballi on Friday, succumbed to his injuries, as the city witnessed a rash of assault incidents involving immersion processions.

The deceased has been identified as Basavaraj Shivur (20), a resident of Hangal taluk in Haveri district and a student of KLE Nursing Institute. Shivur was being treated at the KIMS hospital.

Basavaraj had gone to watch the Ganapati procession along with three other friends. While dancing near the Sangolli Rayanna Circle, a stranger stabbed him following which he was rushed to the KIMS hospital, where he breathed his last.

Basavaraj’s friend Sunil Hadapad, who lodged a complaint with the police, stated that Basavaraj had quarreled with a stranger over dancing following which he was stabbed. 

There were several other assault cases at Durgadabail and Chennamma Circle, where as many as seven people were assaulted.

Police beefed up security for the immersions after the incidents.

Mangaluru, Feb 7: In an attempt to promote menstrual hygiene among women, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has installed vending machines and incinerators to dispense and dispose off sanitary napkins at 10 bus stands of the state including Mangaluru.

The machines have been installed inside the women's washroom and women can purchase sanitary napkins from the vending machines by inserting five rupee coins.

Nearly 100 napkins can be stored in the vending machines at a time and housekeeping personnel have been instructed to replenish the stock, as and when required.

While directions on how to use the machine have been displayed near the machines, people can get seek assistance from housekeeping staff if needed.

Initially, the machines were installed at two depots in Bengaluru on a pilot basis and in the second phase it has been extended to 10 KSRTC bus depots.

Bantwal, Apr 29: Two people were injured after the truck laden with poultry feed rammed into the compound wall of after catching fire on Wednesday, at Marnabailu near Melkar.

Police said the injured were the driver and an assistant in the truck. They were admitted to a private hospital at Mangaluru.

However, it is not yet clear whether the truck transporting poultry feed from a company at Kandur caught fire after colliding against the electric pole or with the compound wall.

Kodagu, Mar 19: One more person has tested positive for coronavirus in Kodagu on Thursday, taking the tally of confirmed cases in the state to 15.

The man has a travel history to Saudi Arabia.

"One person has tested positive for #COVID19 in Kodagu today; he has travel history to Saudi Arabia. He is being treated in an isolation hospital. Total number of positive cases reaches 15 in the state," said B Sriramulu, Karnataka Health Minister.

A total of 169 positive cases of coronavirus have been reported in India so far, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Thursday.

Globally, the virus has infected more than 184,000 people and killed more than 7500, as per the data available on the World Health Organisation website.
