10 including 9 girls returning from job interview perish in road accident

Chitradurga, May 1: As many as 10 persons including nine girls returning from a job interview in Bengaluru, were killed after the multiutility vehicle they were travelling rammed a KSRTC?bus near Heggere in Challakere taluk in the early hours of Saturday.

According to police, all the nine girls were staying at BCM hostel in Siruguppa of Ballari district and had been to Bengaluru to attend interview at a private company. Pradeep, a computer teacher of Siruguppa, had led the girls for the interview. The accident o while they were returning to Siruguppa from Bengaluru.

The victims were travelling in a Land Cruiser which had 15 passengers.
The driver of the Cruiser, in his attempt to overtake a private bus, rammed the KSRTC bus coming in the opposite direction and veered to the left. A speeding bus which was coming right behind, hit the Cruiser, virtually crushing the passengers.

While 7 passengers were killed on the spot, one each succumbed to injuries at Challakere, Chitradurga and Davangere hospitals.

The deceased have been identified as Shanthi, Sarita, Bharathi, Shruthi, Jyothi (all 20 years), Sudha Harshita, Jayashree, Kavya (all 21) and Chandregowda, the driver of the Cruiser.

A seriously injured Pradeep is being treated at a hospital in Davangere. The other injured - Nagarathna, Renuka, Sunita and Huligemma - are being treated at district hospital in Chitradurga.

Additional Superintendent of Police K Parashuram and other senior police officers visited the spot. A case has been registered at Challakere police station.

SC upholds validity of Karnataka reservation law on SC, ST promotions

New Delhi, Mar 19: The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the validity of Karnataka's 2018 reservation law, which granted reservation in promotion to employees belonging to SC and ST categories.

A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud holds that applications filed by a group of general category employees for applying 'post-based quota' and the principle of the creamy layer at entry-level in public employment are not maintainable.

The apex court had, in November last year, reserved its order on the applications filed by general category candidates in the matter.

In May last year, the top court had upheld the law allowing reservations in promotions for SC and ST candidates with consequential seniority.

Fisheries fully shut down in Mangaluru amid COVID-19 scare

Mangaluru, Mar 27: Amid fear of coronavirus spread, the District Collector on Friday ordered the closure of the city’s major fishing area Dhakke.

''The fish caught by us on Wednesday were dumped, without being sold'', fishermen said. Meanwhile, a few them obtained police permission and took the fish to the nearby fish mill.

All the boats which had gone for fishing are back to the dock and the port is deserted. Also, the fishermen who went fishing have been advised to return.

Karnataka's Davanagere district reports 21 COVID-19 positive cases

Davanagere, May 3: Karnataka's Davanagere district on Sunday reported 21 COVID-19 positive cases, said Mahantesh Beelagi, Deputy Commissioner.

The number of COVID-19 patients has suddenly taken a giant leap in the district.

"We had sent 94 samples on May 1, on May 2 we sent 72 samples. Today we sent 164 samples for testing. In the last two days, 21 samples have tested positive for coronavirus, we are tracing to know how did all of them came in contact with COVID-19 infected person," said Mahantesh Beelagi.

"Our surveillance team and police team have started tracing the primary and secondary contacts of all 21 people," he added.
Davanagere is currently in the Green Zone.

Meanwhile, 13 new COVID-19 positive cases were reported in Karnataka till 5 pm on Sunday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 614, according to the State Health Department.
