11 killed in a single day as floods hit 11 districts across Karnataka

Bengaluru, Aug 8: As the rains continued to lash across Karnataka, the number of districts affected by floods raced to 11, with no relief in sight either in release of water from Maharashtra or from the heavy rain lashing most parts of the state.

As many as 28,883 people were evacuated from low-lying villages in 11 flood hit districts. The extent of land under water due to floods is set to increase as Almatti reservoir is expected to receive an inflow of up to five lakh cusecs. The inflow, according to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell, will be the highest till date as per records available.

Eleven people were killed in a single day (on Wednesday) in rain-related incidents across the state. As many as 237 villages in 32 taluks were affected as most rivers continued to swell dangerously.

IMD’s forecast — heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 3-4 days — for coastal and Malnad districts could worsen the situation and hamper rescue work. Road and rail connectivity in north Karnataka and coastal parts was disrupted with the shutting down of 26 state and national highways. Four trains were cancelled due to landslides between Srivagilu and Subramanya Road stations.

Dakshina Kannada, Belagavi, Kodagu and Dharwad districts extended holiday for schools and colleges by 2-3 days. Landslides — which caused havoc in Kodagu last year — staged a comeback with the district reporting a rash of incidents in Madikeri and Suntikoppa. Nethravathi breached the danger mark and flooded low-lying areas in Mangaluru.

Mangaluru, Apr 12: The spread of COVID-19 in the country has been contained through the prompt, effective and timely measures taken by the Centre, BJP Karnataka president and Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said on Sunday.
 
The Centre brought in stringent regulations including the lockdown at the right time and ensured that the pandemic did not spread rapidly, he told reporters here.
 
Kateel inspected the railway coaches which have been converted into isolation wards for infected patients at the central railway station here.
 
He said 20 out of the 32 railway coaches re-designed into wards by Southern Railway's Palakkad division, will be stationed here.
 
The wards are equipped with necessary medical equipment and facilities for doctors and paramedical staff.
 
Kateel said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown how such difficult situations need to be handled.
 
The lockdown was announced in time so that coronavirus spread was checked and all the central departments carried out their works efficiently to monitor the situation, he said.
 
Mangaluru South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath was also present.

Bengaluru, Mar 10: Techies living in a Whitefield apartment block where the city's first Coronavirus patient was residing have been asked to work from home.

The Karnataka government is in touch with the heads of IT and ITES companies, some of which are said to have asked their staff to work from home.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr C Ashwath Narayan, who also holds the IT and BT Portfolio, said the government had directed the companies to explore giving their employees the work-from-home option.

Mangaluru, Jul 6: Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh has rubbished the social media rumours about lockdown in the district from July 8 to 25.

The Viral Rumour

A false message which is going viral on social media including WhatsApp claims that several organisations in Dakshina Kannada in a meeting have unanimously decided observe lockdown from July 8 to July 25. During this period essential services will be available only till 1 p.m.

DC’s clarification

“Don’t believe in such false rumours. Currently the lockdown is from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Every Sunday there will be total lockdown till August 2. People should continue to maintain social distance and follow all the guidelines to prevent the spread of covid-19,” said the deputy commissioner.
