Mangaluru, Jan 14: Opining that the lack of encouragement and training is hindering the growth of talented Muslim youths, Abdul Riyaz Khan, former chairman of Chairman of Karnataka Board of Wakf, said that collective effort from the community is necessary to address this shortcoming.

He was speaking at the seventh annual day celebration of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College in Bantwal taluk on Wednesday.

Lamenting over the lack of political representation of Muslims in Karnataka, he said that even though Muslims have 15% share in the total population of the state, only eleven Muslim representatives are there in the current assembly.

On the other hand, Lingayats, who comprise of 16 to 17 per cent of total population in the state, have around 100 representatives in the assembly, he said.

Among the 1.10 lakh advocates only 8,000 are from Muslim community. Of this, only 1,200 Muslims are working and others only possessed degrees. Similarly, among 1400 women advocates of the state, only 300 are from Muslim community and most of them are not working, he revealed.

The Karnataka high court has only one Muslim judge. In past 28 years the state did not witness even a single district judge from Muslim community. Of the over 2,800 judges in Karnataka only 20 are Muslims, he said adding that in civil service, the representation of Muslims is less than that of SC and ST.

He called upon the talented Muslims to give more priority to administrative and legal fields over medical and technical fields. “We need more advocates, judges, IAS and IPS officer than doctors and engineers,” he said.

Stating that education is a key for the development of Muslims, he applauded the contribution of Melkar women’s college towards education. The college, which started with 40 students in 2009 now has 700 students.

Talent Research Foundation founder Abdul Rauf Puthige, Hidyah Foundation founder HK Khasim Ahmed, KKMA representative SM Farooq, Chairman of the college SM Rashid Haji were present among others.

Prizes were distributed among students on the occasion. PU student Fathima Begum recited Quran. Zuhaira presented a song. B.Com student Mariyam Aabida delivered welcome address. Nashat proposed vote of thanks. B.Com student Naushina Banu compered the programme.

Blaming others no use. Our community should take interest to address this major issue by encouraging and supporting the students to join the civil service courses. Giving speech and words do not solve this issue. Congratulation Melkar Womes College management for imparting quality education for the rural female students.

The main problems here not only from Government side!! Muslims have to blame for this!! In Muslims community you can find enough qualified candidates for all those field which mentioned above, but Muslims men after graduating immediately applying for Gulf country, ladies they even for the secure job are not allowed to join, I discuss this matter with many my Muslim friends their opinion same. Muslim organization should bring awareness among their community in this matter, encourage ladies to do the job where they feel safe.

In a shocking incident, a woman allegedly sold her five-day-old baby boy to two siblings in Karnataka’s Davanagere for Rs 5,000 on Tuesday (May 26) in connivance with a hospital employee, according to police.

Acting on a complaint by Honnali child development project officer Mahantesh Poojar, police booked a case against six persons in connection with the incident and arrested four of them by Tuesday night.

Police said the woman allegedly sold the baby, born on May 20 at Honnali taluk hospital, to Annesh Naik, 36, and his sister Lavanya, 39, in the early hours of Tuesday in front of the Honnali KSRTC bus stand.

The six accused have been identified as Kumar, 44, a staff nurse at Honnali hospital; Mahesh, a group ‘D’ employee at the hospital who facilitated the deal; Basavaraj, 36, a lab technician at Hirekerur hospital; Annesh; Lavanya; and the mother of the infant.

New Delhi, Apr 29: Karnataka is likely to withdraw the case filed against a CRPF commando who was arrested by state police officials for alleged assault on them during COVID-19 lockdown duty in Belgaum, a charge contested by the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force.

In a bid to diffuse the ongoing tussle between CRPF and Karnataka police, the official communication sent to CRPF headquarters on Tuesday, with the details of bail granted to CRPF jawan Sunil Sachin Sawant, stated that the issue was discussed with the DGP Karnataka and other senior state authorities with a request to withdraw the case.

According to official communication, Karnataka Director General of Police has assured top CRPF officers that the "case registered against CRPF CoBRA commando is likely to be withdrawn by the state authorities".

The communication also states that "they assured that the criminal case registered against constable of 207 CoBRA BN is likely to be withdrawn by the state authority."

A CRPF CoBRA commando was thrashed and dragged to police station barefoot by police on April 23 for allegedly violating lockdown norms and assaulting/deterring public servant from discharging his duty in Belgavi district of Karnataka. A case was also registered against him.

This is not the first time when the state is showing efforts to solve the matter amicably.

Karnataka culture and tourism minister CT Ravi had also tweeted on April 27 claiming that he had a word with two ministers including state deputy chief minister who 'confirmed that the issue will be resolved amicably'

"Unfortunate that this incident happened with a CRPF Commando and the police. I have spoken with Industries Minister @JagadishShettar and Transport Minister @LaxmanSavadi. Both have confirmed that the issue will be resolved amicably," CT Ravi had tweeted.

CRPF Additional Director General (ADG) Sanjay Arora had also written to DG showing his displeasure over the ill-treatment done by Karnataka police with CRPF jawan and had said that "Keeping in view the gravity of the incident and its impact on the relationship between the two police forces, I am desired by the Director-General CRPF to request you to kindly get the matter inquired and provide justice. We would be thankful if you could inform us of the outcome."

Arora, in his letter, had also said that Karnataka police should have informed the force before registering a case.

The CRPF CbBRA commando was on extended leave and cleaning his motorcycle in front of his house in Examba city when he was allegedly manhandled and ill-treated in front of his family members and paraded to the police station barefoot, where he was kept in chains and handcuff.

The commando was granted bail by a court on Tuesday in the matter.

Sunil Sachin Sawant has been involved in various anti-Naxals operations and is a part of the CRPF elite CoBRA force, which is famous for doing anti-Naxals operations and has eliminated hundreds of Naxals in the past few years.

Bengaluru, May 27: Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Wednesday hit out at Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa-led Karnataka government for allegedly "betraying" the people by not fulfilling its Rs 1,610 crore COVID-19 package promise.

Taking a dig at Yediyurappa over the matter, the Congress leader tweeted, "Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yediyurappa has betrayed people by not fulfilling his Rs 1,610 crore package promise. He seems to be following his @BJP4India leader @PMOIndia @narendramodi."

"Crisis and vulnerability should not be misused for political gains and BJP for India is insensitive towards the same," the former Karnataka Chief Minister said.

On May 6, Yediyurappa had urged migrant workers to stay back as construction activities have resumed and announced a Rs 1,610 crores COVID-19 financial package for the state.

"A package of Rs 1,610 crores will be released as COVID-19 financial relief. One time compensation of Rs 5,000 will be given to 2,30,000 barbers and 7,75,000 drivers," the Chief Minister said.

Referring to media reports, Siddarmiah cornered the state government for asking the licence to release funds for unorganised sector workers.

"How can we expect washermen and other unorganised sector workers to have licence for their work?" he asked.

It looks like Karnataka Chief Minister is very far from reality, he added.
