11-year-old boy single-handedly fights mighty python, rescues himself

Mangaluru, Oct 5: In an unusual incident, an 11-year-old boy put up a brave fight with a python which had attacked him and managed defeat the giant reptile within a minute at a village in Dakshina Kannada district.

Vaishakh, a class V student of Adarsha English Medium School, Sajipa in Bantwal taulk, is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital for snakebite injuries on his hands and legs.

The mighty snake unexpectedly pounced on the boy near his house Kolake hamlet in Sajipa viilage when he was walking towards his grandparents' house after returning home from school.

The python which emerged from the bushes completely encircled the boy and caused him to fall on the ground. The hungry reptile immediately started swallowing his legs.

In spite of this unexpected attack, the boy showed extraordinary courage and presentence of mind. He spotted a sharp stone nearby and started attacking the python's head with it. This caused injuries to the eyes of python and it began to release its grip on the boy.

Asked girl to stay away!

It is learnt that having heard Vaishakh's cries for help, a neighbourhood girl Harshitha rushed to save him. But the boy prevented her from coming near sensing danger to her. Once the python moved away the girl lifted him and took him to his house.

During the struggle, the boy suffered serious injuries on his hands, legs and other parts of the body and was immediately admitted to a private hospital at B.C. Road.

He was later shifted to Father Muller Hospital, Thumbe for further treatment. Since the condition of the boy became serious, he was once again shifted to Wenlock Hospital, Mangaluru.

Kasaragod, Apr 2: Kerala reported 21 new cases of coronavirus with eight from the worst affected Kasaragod district, taking the tally of active patients to 256, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Thursday.

Besides, Kasaragod, five positive cases have been detected from Idukki, two from Kollam and one each from Thiruvananthapuram, Pathnamthitta, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur, he told reporters here.

At least 1.65 lakh people are under survillence in the state, 643 in various hospitals.

Presently, 256 people are under treatment for the virus in the state where two fatalities have occurred, Vijayan said.

Mangaluru, Feb 13: The Customs Officers of Airport Team-II at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) on Thursday intercepted a passenger who attempted to smuggle gold worth Rs 9.39 lakhs.

The team led by Rajesh Poojary nabbed the passenger who attempted to smuggle 233.18 grams of gold strips concealed inside a rechargeable emergency light and solar sensor wall light.

The officials said a passenger named Mohammed Mahir Patla (24) from Kasaragod, who arrived from Dubai yesterday evening by Air India flight number IX384 attempted to smuggle the gold.

Thiruvananthapuram, May 29: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that fishing in Kerala coast and southeast Arabian Sea has been completely banned from Thursday midnight as the state is expected to receive rainfall early next month.

"India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed that southwest monsoon will arrive in Kerala coast by the first week of June. The state will receive rainfall in the next five days. Fishing in Kerala coast and the southeast Arabian sea to be completely banned from midnight," Vijayan said.

On Thursday, the IMD announced that conditions are favourable in Kerala for the onset of the southwest monsoon on June 1.

"A low-pressure area is likely to form over the southeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea from May 31 to June 4, 2020. In view of this, conditions are very likely to become favourable from June 1, 2020 for the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala," the IMD said in its bulletin.

It also stated that the southwest monsoon has further advanced into some parts of Maldives-Comorin area, some more parts of south Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of Andaman Sea and Andaman and the Nicobar Islands.
