12 including Prof Ananthamurthy, Kinhanna Rai bag state awards

ananthmurthyBangalore, May 22: As many as 12 eminent personalities including internationally acclaimed thinker Prof U?R?Ananthamurthy, musician Prof R?Vishveshwaran and writer Kayyara Kinhanna Rai have been chosen for the Kannada and Culture Department's annual awards for the year 2012.

The awards will be presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on May 23 at Ravindra Kalakshetra, according to Kannada and Culture Minister Umashree.

The Basava Puraskara, for which Ananthamurthy has been chosen, carries a purse of Rs 10 lakh.

Other recipients of various awards are: Kayyara Kinhanna Rai (Pampa award) R?Vishveshwaran (T?Chowdaiah award); B?N?Sumitra Bai (Danachintamani Attimabbe), Kum Veerabhadrappa (Prof K?G Kundanagar Gadinada Sahitya Prashasti), Markandeya Avadhani (Kumvaravyasa), Pandit Sangameshwara Guruva (Nijaguna Purandara), Somasundaram (Santa Shishunala Sharif), Vasundhara Doreswamy (Natyarani Shantala), Lakshmibai Enagi (Gubbi Veeranna), U?Bhaskar Rao (Venkatappa) and G B Hamsanandacharya (Jakkanachari).

The Chowdaiah award carries a purse of Rs 5 lakh and the rest of the awards Rs 3 lakh.

Bengaluru, Jun 28: Novel coronavirus has claimed another police officer's life here, official sources said on Sunday.

According to official sources, the deceased police officer attached to station in Whitefield division had collapsed in his home on Saturday.

The 57-year-old Police officer, working as an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) who was diagnosed with COVID-19 infection, also reportedly suffered from breathing related problems, the sources said.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 10: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday said that it has been 100 days since the first COVID-19 case was reported and shared the updated figures of positive cases, along with the efforts made by the state government to contain the virus.

"100 Days of #COVID19 | Kerala Story It's been 100 days since the first case was reported. 258 active cases, 97 recovered, Total confirmed: 357 Deaths: 2. 12,710 samples tested Special COVID-19 Hospital, 1,251 Community Kitchens, 28,08,650 Individuals Served, 3,676 Destitutes Rehabilitated," Vijayan tweeted.

India's first case was reported in Kerala in January. The patient was a student, who was studying at Wuhan University in China.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Friday informed that India's total number of COVID-19 positive cases now stands at 6,412. Out of these, 5,709 are active patients and 504 of them have been cured/discharged and migrated.

With 30 new deaths reported in the last 12 hours, the death toll has reached 199.

Bengaluru, Apr 10: The Karnataka Education Board on Friday further postponed the annual examination for SSLC to May due to extension of lockdown to arrest spread of coronavirus which is spreading like wildfire in the state.

Minister for Primary and Higher Education S Suresh Kumar also announced that the PUC examination were also postponed to May.

"However, depending upon the situation we will announce the date in May and will inform the students one week earlier of the examination date to give time for preparation,"
