Bhatkal, May 22: The Uttara Kannada police have arrested thirteen persons for waylaying a truck and stealing over two dozen cows from it after attacking the legal transporters at Murdeshwara in Bhatkal taluk.

The arrested have been identified as Janardhan, Nagaraj Nayak, Venkatesh, Kumar, Rama, Nagaraj Nayyar, Venkatesh, Bhaskar, Mahesh, Manjunath, Annappa, Shabhareesh, and Girish. All the accused are said to be activists of a saffron group.

Police also have recovered 24 of the 28 cows that had been taken away from the truck by the accused.

The attack took place last Sunday when 28 cows were being transported in the truck from a milk dairy in Gujarat’s Gir, to another in Kerala’s Thrissur. There were two drivers and two cleaners in the truck.

Police sources said that when the truck was passing through Murdeshwar on the National Highway 66 at 8 p.m, a group of miscreants waylaid it and hurled stones. The group pulled out the four persons from the truck and assaulted them.

Though the drivers said that they had permission for transporting the cows, the group did not bother to check the documents. Some persons in the group also reportedly thrashed a couple of policemen who came to the spot. Later, the group members lowered the cows from the truck and started taking them away.

Vinayak Patil, Superintendent of Police of Uttara Kannada said that the accused had been booked for dacoity and assault. He said that more people are likely to be arrested in the case.

These terrorists are not cow rakshaks but cow thiefs and cow bhakshaks.  This is their normal duty to steal cows and either sell them or eat the meat.   They should be treated as terrorists and put in jail for ever.   Its unfortunate that police are soft to these terrorists especially in Uttara kannada dist.    These terrorists regularly steal cows by stopping the carriers.   These terrorists took away the cows in the presence of police and police did not take any action unless pressure came from higher authorities.   New state Govt should be bold on these terrorits and teach good lesson so that none else should try to steal live stock.   They are jobless people and being hired + lured by sangh parivar.   They usual steal cows from the open area and gow shala and blame others.

Bengaluru, Apr 14: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday demanded that BS Yediyurappa-led government should cut down on 'unnecessary' expenditures to mobilise funds to fight against coronavirus.

"Yediyurappa government needs to cut down on unwanted expenses which government is spending on several things in order to save the taxpayers money to fight against coronavirus," said Siddaramaiah here in a press conference.

He alleged that the ruling state government is indulged in corruption due to which the government is running bankrupt, adding that instead of mobilising funds, Yediyurappa government is only concentrating on auction of Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) sites.
Siddaramaiah claimed that the "BDA was already in loss".

"The present government does not have money due to its involvement in corruption. The Karnataka government must concentrate on cutting expenses and there is no need to waste money on unwanted things including vehicles for board and corporations chiefs," said the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader.

"Yediyurappa government has decided to auction more than 12,000 BDA sites to get benefit of Rs 15,000 crore, rather than fullfiling requirements of people of the state at the time of coronavirus crisis," he said.

In Karnataka, 247 people have tested positive for coronavirus, including 59 cured and discharged and 6 deaths, according to the Union Health Ministry.

Mandya, July 30: BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel on Wednesday said Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has done a commendable job in tackling the Covid-19 situation and floods and that the question of changing the leadership does not arise.

Karnataka on Wednesday reported 5,503 new cases of Covid-19 and 92 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 1,12,504 and the death toll to 2,147.

Speaking to reporters here, Kateel said, "Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi has gone to Delhi to discuss the projects sanctioned to state with the central minister. There is no need to read too much into it."

Replying to a query on graft charges against the BSY government by the Congress, Kateel said, "Congress national president, state unit president are out on bail in graft cases . Why did a Congress leader who calls himself a bande (rock) has approached court seeking stay on CBI probe? Before making any allegations against the government, they should think about 'irregularities' in Indira Canteen and housing schemes," he charged.

Instead of instilling confidence and hope among the people in these testing times, the Congress is unnecessarily creating fear with petty politics, he told reporters in Shravanabelagola, Hassan district.

"The Yediyurappa-led BJP government is working day and night to tackle the Covid-19. Similarly, several non-governmental organisations have joined hands with the government in the fight against the virus. But, the Congress is only creating confusion by issuing baseless statements," Kateel said.
