14 calves die while transportation, 115 cattle seized; one held

Hassan, Apr 20: Acting on a tip off, the police intercepted four vehicles and rescued 115 cattle that were being transported to slaughter houses at Baraguru handpost near Channarayapatna in Hassan on Tuesday. However, 14 calves died of asphyxiation, it is said.

cattlePolice seized the vehicles and the driver of one of them (from Yasin Nagar in Holenarsipur) has been taken into custody. The other three drivers fled the scene, abandoning the vehicles.

The police were checking the vehicles when they received the tip-off. Upon seeing the police, the drivers stopped the vehicles and took to their heels. The police were successful in nabbing one person.

The vehicles and the cattle were brought to the police station. There were eight buffaloes, seven cows and the remaining were calves. The mouth and legs of the animals were tied with ropes. Fourteen calves died due to asphyxiation.

The local residents fed the rescued animals with water and milk. The animals were later shifted to Pinjrapole care centre in Mysuru.

Bengaluru, Mar 13: In the wake of coronavirus outbreak, Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa has summoned an emergency meeting with ministers and senior officials on Friday to discuss the situation.

The schools, malls and other public places have been shut to control the spread of the deadly virus.

Schools in the state have announced early summer vacation for their students this academic year as a precautionary measure amid Covid-19 scare.

Mangaluru, Jan 11: Reacting to the recent video clippings provided to the media by former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy in connection with the December 19 unrest in Mangaluru, city Police Commissioner Dr PS Harsha on Saturday said that the video has to be seen in a proper sequence to come to a conclusion on the happenings of that day.

Releasing videos in bits and pieces on social media or any platform will not help disclose the truth, said Harsha.

Mangaluru, Jul 26: Karnataka government has initiated steps to provide insurance cover for priests and others working in temples coming under the Endowment Department -- a move that will benefit 50,000 people and their families.

Speaking to media here on Saturday evening, Minister for Endowment Kota Srinivas Poojary said there is a need to implement the decision at the earliest to provide relief to the priests and families of employees working in temples.

Department officials have been directed to include employees of state-owned temples under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyothi Bima scheme and also enrol them under State Bank of India’s group personal accident insurance policy at the earliest. The Central insurance scheme will provide Rs 2 lakh cover to family members in case of death due to accidents.
