1.6kg gold concealed in rectum seized at Mangaluru Airport; 2 held

Mangaluru, Jun 9: The customs officers of Air Intelligence Unit and the batch of officers at the Mangaluru International Airport have busted a modus operandi of gold smuggling by three passengers by way of concealment in rectum. The three passengers had arrived from Dubai on Thursday by Air India and Jet Airways flights.

M Subramanyam, customs commissioner, said that the officers on careful profiling and screening shortlisted the three passengers who were subjected to thorough interrogation. During the interrogation, the officers found that the contraband gold in the form of rectangular cut pieces of 1 kg gold bars totally weighing 1660.750 gms valued about Rs 49.15 lakh was packed in carbon paper and black coloured adhesive tape and in turn brought by way of concealment in rectum. All the three passengers hail from Ulhasnagar, Thane in Maharashtra.

Out of the three, two passengers who had worked as a gang were arrested and produced before SG Gangadhar, principal civil judge (senior division) and chief judicial magistrate, Mangaluru, who remanded them to judicial custody.

Due to several detections of contraband concealed in conventional items at Mangaluru Airport, the smugglers are now adopting new modus operandi to smuggle the contraband by way of body concealment to hoodwink the department.

However, the officers equipped with advance passenger information are able to profile and zero in on suspected passengers, who are subjected to detailed inquiry and examination, said the commissioner. Investigation is under progress.

Bengaluru, May 30: Health Minister B Sriramulu banned the consumption of chewing tobacco in public places on Saturday, which is marked as World Tobacco Day. The ban would include chewing paan masala and spitting in public places.

In June 2013, the state banned the manufacture, storage, sale, or distribution of gutka and paan masala containing tobacco or nicotine as ingredients to reduce the prevalence of tobacco use. On October 26, 2016, the state proscribed all kinds of chewing tobacco, containing tobacco or nicotine or both in accordance with the Supreme Court order.

Karnataka is the second state in India to ban e-cigarettes. The state also prohibited single cigarettes. Until September 2019, the state counselled 15,698 patients in tobacco cessation centres set up in private dental colleges.

Udupi, Jun 20: Movement of heavy vehicles on Agumbe Ghat section was banned till October 15, following heavy rain lashing due to onset of South West Monsoon.

The Agumbe Ghat connects Shivamogga with the Udupi district. There is a possibility of landslides on either side of the Ghat road if movement of heavy vehicles is allowed during the monsoon, said Udupi DC G Jagadeesh in statement issued here on Saturday.

The movement of all heavy vehicles above 12 tonnes has been banned on the road. Till end of monsoon all the heavy vehicles have to move via Udupi-Brahmavar-Barkur-Shankaranarayana; Siddapura-Hosangady-Hulikal Ghat-Hosanagara-Theerthahalli; Udupi-Karkala-Bajagoli-S K Border-Kerekatte-Sringeri- Shivamogga.

Bengaluru, Jul 16: Aiming to forge a citizen-government partnership in combating the Covid pandemic, the Karnataka government is seeking plasma donations from survivors for a token appreciation of Rs 5,000, a minister said on Wednesday.

"I request all those who have recovered from Covid-19 to donate plasma and save lives. As a token of our appreciation, we will give Rs 5,000 to patients who come forward and donate their plasma," said Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar.

He said the battle against the pandemic can only be won through citizen-government partnership.

On Wednesday, Covid cases swelled by 1,975 infections in Bengaluru, ground zero for the pandemic in the southern state, raising its total number of cases to 22,944, out of which 17,051 are active.

In the past 24 hours, the state as a whole registered a record 3,176 cases, raising Karnataka's tally to 47,253, even as 87 people succumbed to the virus.

Meanwhile, Sudhakar said 8,134 booth level workforce will conduct a house to house survey along with other Covid control measures in Bengaluru.

He said many locals and block level officers will be the members of the workforce.
