1965 war anniversary: PM pays tribute to soldiers, veterans boycott function

New Delhi, Aug 28: On the 50th anniversary of the 1965 war with Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid a rich tribute to the brave soldiers and stated that they had triumphed over every obstacle to protect India's unity and integrity.

However, veterans of the war will gather at Jantar Mantar to observe the golden jubilee of the war. The veterans have decided to boycott the government's 1965 India-Pakistan war commemoration over One Rank One Pension stir.

A message was sent out by the organisers, inviting the veterans and families of those who were martyred in the war to gather at Jantar Mantar at noon on Friday. The veterans have been sitting on protest demanding OROP for 75 days.

"As we mark the 50th anniversary of 1965 war, I bow to all brave soldiers who fought for our motherland in the war," Modi tweeted. "The courage & bravery of our Armed Forces is very inspiring. They triumphed over every obstacle & protected India's unity & integrity," Modi said in another tweet.

He also recalled the dynamic leadership of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and said that in the 1965 war, he led from the front and was a key source of strength for the nation.

This day marks the victory of the Indian forces in the battle along the strategic Haji Pir Pass in Jammu and Kashmir.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi in her message said that on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the historic war, she joins the nation in paying tributes to the country's armed forces, who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

New Delhi, Jul 8: India has reported a spike of 22,752 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the country's coronavirus tally to 7,42,417 on Wednesday, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Out of the total cases reported, 4,56,830 patients have been cured/discharged from the disease while one patient has been migrated, the Health Ministry informed.

It added that there are 2,64,944 active cases in the country.

482 deaths reported in the last 24 hours due to COVID-19 in the country, taking India's death toll to 20,642.

According to the Union Health Ministry, Maharashtra continues to be the worst affected state reporting 2,17,121 coronavirus cases and 9,250 fatalities.

Tamil Nadu -- the second worst-affected state from COVID-19 -- has a total of 1,18,594 cases and 1,636 deaths due to coronavirus.

While Delhi has a total of 1,02,831 COVID-19 cases including 3,165 deaths.

The Indian Council of Medical Research on Wednesday informed that a total of 1,04,73,771 samples tested for COVID-19 up to July 7. Of these, 2,62,679 samples were tested on Tuesday.

New Delhi, Jan 16: The Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government on Thursday rejected the mercy plea of Mukesh, one of the convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya case.

The mercy plea was then forwarded to Lieutenant Governor, who has now sent it to Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

The convicts were sentenced to death for raping a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus in the national capital on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012.

The victim, who was later given the name Nirbhaya, had succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Singapore where she had been airlifted for medical treatment.

Sopore, Jul 1: Police rescued a three-year-old boy from getting hit by bullets during a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan and a civilian lost their lives after terrorists fired upon a CRPF patrolling party in Sopore.

Two of the injured CRPF jawans are known to be in critical condition. Three CRPF personnel were also injured in the attack, as per CRPF.
