2 children die in suicide pact, parents critical

Udupi, Oct 17: Two children died and their parents are battling for life after the four consumed poison, in a suspected suicide pact at Ganganadu village near Byndoor in Udupi district.

16-year-old Ashwin Kumar, a Class 10 student and 14-year-old Aishwarya Lakshmi, a Class 8 student are the deceased. Their parents are Shankaranarayana Hebbar (45), a cook by profession and Mahalaxmi (38).

The incident came light on Monday morning. Some neighbours came to the house and found all four unconscious and alerted police.

A team rushed to the spot and moved them to hospital where the children were declared brought dead. The parents were put in the intensive care unit where their condition is said to be critical.

A case has been registered at Byndoor police station and investigations are on. Details awaited.

Mangaluru, May 14: An 80-year-old woman from Kulshekar in Mangaluru, who was undergoing treatment for covid-19, today breathed her last in the hospital.

The victim, identified as P-507, was said to be in critical condition for past few days.

The elderly woman and her 45-year-old son were tested coronavirus positive on April 27 days after she got admitted to First Neuro hospital at Padil in the city.

With this the covid-19 death toll in Dakshina Kannada rose to five. Shockingly, all five victims are women. The district has so far reported 34 positive cases including five deaths. Currently there are only 14 active cases. 15 people have already discharged.

Kalaburagi, Mar 14: Delivering its judgment within a period of three and half months, a court here on Friday awarded death sentence to a man, who was a convict in the rape and murder case of a minor girl.

The Second Additional District and Sessions court in Kalaburagi sentenced Yallappa to death in the matter.

"The convict, had on December 2, 2019, taken the minor victim behind an Angwanwadi centre in Yakapur village. He raped the girl, murdered her and ran away," special public prosecutor LV Chutnalakar told media.
He said that the body of the girl was recovered around 10 pm on the same night.

"The investigation in the matter was taken up after a complaint was filed by the parents of the victim. The police conducted a speedy probe and filed a chargesheet, after which the conviction and sentence were pronounced," Chutnalakar said.
