2 CPM leaders arrested for involvement in murder of 2 Youth Cong workers

Kasaragod, May 15: The Crime Branch team probing the twin murders of Youth Congress workers Kripesh and Sarath Lal at Kallyot, near Periye, here has arrested two local leaders of the CPI(M) here on the charges of helping the accused escape and destroy evidence.

The arrested are CPI(M) Udma area committee secretary K. Manikandan and Periye local committee secretary N. Balakrishnan. They were produced before the Hosdurg judicial first class magistrate court here on Tuesday morning. They were granted bail.

According to the police, the accused involved in committing the crime had gone to Velutholi, near Udma, and met Manikandan. He, along with Balakrishnan, had helped them to go into hiding.

They were charged under Indian Penal Code Sections 212 (harbouring offender) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence). The arrest of the two leaders followed their interrogation earlier in connection with the case.

The two YC workers were hacked to death on February 17. The investigating team headed by M. Pradeep, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Crime Branch, Malappuram, had earlier arrested 10 accused including CPI(M) local committee member A. Peethambaran, the alleged kingpin in the murder case, and six others who were alleged to be directly involved in the murders.

One CPI(M) worker, Subheesh, who was arraigned as an accused directly involved in the murders, is absconding.

150 witnesses

As many as 150 witnesses have been questioned and their statements recorded, according to the police. In an affidavit filed by the investigating team in the Kerala High Court, Manikandan had advised the accused to change their clothes and hide the weapons.

The arrest is seen as an embarrassment for the CPI(M) which had stated that the party had no role in the twin murders.

The families of the slain YC workers had been alleging that the murders had been carried out with the knowledge of the party leadership here.

In their statements to the Crime Branch, they had named Udma MLA K. Kunhiraman and former MLA K.V. Kunhiraman as having connection with the crime.

Bengaluru, May 15: There is no trace of community spread of COVID-19 pandemic in Karnataka due to the strict measures taken by the State Government, Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said on Friday.

All those tested positive for the virus here have arrived from other states and are currently being treated in quarantine centres, he tweeted.

Over 25 per cent of the COVID-19 positive cases, which were detected in the state, were related to those who had either come from abroad or other states, and only about 7 per cent cases were associated with the influenza-like diseases, his tweet further read.

Bengaluru, Feb 17: Karnataka State Government have plans to establish three more ultra Mega Renewable Energy power parks, each of 2500 MW capacity, Karnataka Governor, Vajubhai Wala informed the joint legislative meeting, here on Monday.

Addressing a Joint Legislative meeting here, he said that the proposed Ultra Mega Renewable Energy parks would come up at Koppala, Bidar and Gadaga in the state.

Bengaluru, Jun 2: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Monday claimed 70 per cent of the people of the country want Narendra Modi to not only complete the current term, but also want him as the Prime Minister for the next term.

He also called PM Modi "iron leader" for scrapping Article 370 that terminated special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

"70 per cent of the people of this nation want Narendra Modiji not only to complete this term, but also want him as the Prime Minister for the next term, so that he can find solution to the problems faced by this country. This is the aspiration of the young India," he said.

Mr Yediyurappa said PM Modi has successfully completed one year of the second term and the country is surging ahead in the path of progress under his "exceptional and far-sighted leadership."

"The Prime Minister is leading the country forward towards development with his Sab Ka Saath, Sab Ka Vikas, Sab Ka Vishwas principle and inclusive schemes," he said, adding that PM Modi is spearheading the cause of building a "strong and self-reliant Bharath."

Speaking to reporters in the backdrop of the one year of the Modi government''s second term in office, the chief minister said Modi is recognised as an exceptional leader not only in India, but also at the global level, through his mantra - Vasudaiva Kutumbakam.

Mr Yediyurappa termed the PM "iron leader" for scrapping Article 370 that terminated special status to Jammu and Kashmir, and formation of Jammu- Kashmir and Ladakh as Union Territories.

He listed the key decisions of the BJP-led central government such as banning the practice of triple talaq among Muslims, the Vande Bharath Mission, the Citizenship Amendment Act, one country-one ration card scheme, new Motor Vehicle Act, besides also "finding solution to Ram Mandir issue" , among others.

Mr Yediyurappa said PM Modi's decision has played a decisive role in dealing with the COVID-19 situation in India. He has competently handled a huge challenge of combating the coronavirus in a country with a population of 130 crore.

"He implemented the most stringent lockdown restrictions in the world to control the spread of COVID-19 and achieved remarkable success," he said, and lauded the Rs 20 lakh crore package that has been announced to revive the economy amid the pandemic.

"Modiji also supported the State during the devastating floods last year.....the state government is determined to develop Karnataka deriving inspiration from our Prime Minister''s efficiency."
