2 killed in clash at PDP’s victory celebration in Kashmir

PDPs_victory_celebrationSrinagar, May 17: Two persons died and at least 15 got injured when a Police vehicle overturned during a clash between the followers of the two mainstream political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] and the Peoples Conference [PC], in Kupwara district of north Kashmir, on Friday evening.

Informed sources in north Kashmir said that the workers of the two parties attacked each other at Warsun village when the PDP followers were celebrating their candidate Muzaffar Hussain Baig’s victory in the Lok Sabha elections in Baramulla-Kupwara constituency. The PC supporters, who were upset over their candidate Salamuddin Bajad's defeat, reportedly attacked the PDP victory revelers when they were returning to home.

High pitch slogans and extensive use of firecrackers reportedly ignited the group clash.

Informed sources said that 15 men were injured and later two died when a Police armoured vehicle overturned, hitting a number of the people during the clashes. Two of the critically injured were rushed to a Srinagar hospital.

Deputy Inspector General of Police in North Kashmir Ghulam Hassan Bhat confirmed the death of the two political activists. He told The Hindu that the Station House Office Inspector Tanvir was returning to Kralpora after defusing the crisis when a Police vehicle, evacuating the injured to a hospital, overturned in the melee. Two died and several got injured.

Ali Mohammad Choudhary, whose father Salamuddin Choudhary has been a prominent Congress activist and has lately joined the PDP, told The Hindu that Abdul Rashid Ganai and Abdul Rashid Bajad, both 4o-year-olds, were hit by the SHO’s Rakhshak and they died on the spot. He said that over 20 PDP men were injured when the PC workers, apparently angry over the victory celebrations, attacked them "without any provocation".

"When the SHO and the Dy SP were carrying the injured, their Rakshak driver was hit in the head in the stone pelting. He lost the control and his vehicle overturned”, Mr. Choudhary said.

New Delhi, Aug 4: Over 50 per cent of COVID-19 deaths in India have taken place among people aged 60 years and above and 37 per cent deaths have been reported among patients in the age group of 45 to 60 years, Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference, Rajesh Bhushan, Secretary, Health Ministry said that 11 per cent COVID-19 deaths took place in the age group of 26 to 44.

The 18 to 25 age group and those below 18 years reported one per cent deaths each.
"Currently, 5,86,298 active COVID-19 cases are in India and over 12 lakh people have recovered.

50 per cent deaths due to COVID19 have taken place among the age group of 60 years or above and 37 per cent deaths took place in the age group between 45 to 60 years," Bhushan said.

"A total of 11 per cent COVID-19 deaths took place in the age group of 26 to 44. Only 1 per cent in 18 to 25 age group and 1 per cent in below the age of 18 years," he added.

Bhushan said that 68 per cent of COVID-19 deaths have been reported among male patients and 32 per cent among female patients which is broadly in line with the global scenario.

The number of recovered COVID-19 patients in India is increasing daily and is now over double the number of active cases.

Bhushan said that the case fatality rate (CFR) is lowest since the first lockdown.

"More than 2 crore COVID-19 tests have been conducted, including more than 6.6 lakh tests in the last 24 hours. Recovered cases are now double of the active cases.

"This is the first time after the first lockdown that the fatality rate is at the lowest, at 2.10 per cent. The fatality rate has seen a progressive decline and it is continuing, which is a good sign," he added.

According to the World Health Organisation, CFR is a measure of the severity of a disease and is defined as the proportion of reported cases of a specified disease or condition which are fatal within a specified time.

New Delhi, Jul 17: With the highest single-day spike of 34,956 cases, and 687 deaths, India's COVID-19 positive cases crossed the 10 lakh mark on Friday, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total positive cases stand at 10,03,832 including 3,42,473 active cases, 6,35,757 cured/discharged/migrated and 25,602 deaths, according to the Ministry.

As per the Ministry, Maharashtra -- the worst-affected state from the infection -- has a total of 2,84,281 COVID-19 cases and 11,194 fatalities.

While Tamil Nadu has a tally of 1,56,369 cases and 2,236 deaths due to COVID-19.
Delhi has reported a total of 1,18,645 cases and 3,545 deaths due to COVID-19.

New Delhi, Mar 20: Bodies of the four Nirbhaya convicts who were hanged on Friday morning at Tihar Jail have been sent to hospital for a post-mortem, following which it will be handed over to the families, according to an official.

After the hanging at 5:30 am today, the bodies were taken from Tihar Jail to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital for post mortem at around 8:20 am.

Tihar jail Director-General Sandeep Goel said that the bodies will be handed over to the families after the post mortem.

The families, however, will have to give a written undertaking that they will not make a public demonstration of the cremation or burial of the executed person.

The superintendent will also consult the District Magistrate and the Deputy Commissioner of Police for arrangements for the disposal of the body.

The post mortem comes in line with the Supreme Court's order in Shatrughan Chauhan's case in January 2014, which had mandated the same observing that there is a dearth of experienced hangman in the country.

"By making the performance of post mortem obligatory, the cause of the death of the convict can be found out, which will reveal whether the person died as a result of the dislocation of the cervical vertebrate or by strangulation which results on account of too long a drop," the apex court had said in its order.

"Our constitution permits the execution of death sentence only through the procedure established by law and this procedure must be just, fair and reasonable," the order added.

All four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case -- Akshay Singh Thakur, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma, and Mukesh Singh -- were hanged till death at 5:30 am this morning.

The case pertains to the brutal gang-rape and killing of a 23-year-old paramedical student in a moving bus on the night of December 16, 2012, by six people including a juvenile in the national capital. The woman had died at a Singapore hospital a few days later.

One of the adults accused had allegedly committed suicide in the prison during the trial, while the juvenile was released from a correction home after a period of three years.
