2 Muslim sisters met their Sikh brother for the first time after 1947 separation

Lahore, Nov 27: Two Muslim sisters, who were separated from their Sikh brother during the partition of 1947, had an emotional reunion on Sunday at Gurdwara Janam Asthan, Nankana Sahib after more than 70 years.

As reported by Hindustan Times, the three siblings originally hailed from a village near Dera Baba Nanak in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab.

Ulfat Bibi and Mairaj Bibi met and hugged Beant Singh for the first time in over seven decades.

Before the partition, the siblings lived with their family members in Paracha village near Dera Baba Nanak. But when they were migrating to Pakistan, the partition violence separated the two sisters from the brother.

The sisters had managed to settle with the family in Pakistan. Beant Singh, however, couldn’t cross the border and remained in India.

For more than 70 years, Beant had been in touch with Ulfat and Mairaj through letters. But recently, he finally met them in person after he travelled to Pakistan as a part of the Sikh Janta (group) from India.

Ulfat Bibi told Express Tribune that she will now be allowed to travel to  India to meet her sister-in-law and other family members.

According to reports, the sisters also appealed to the Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to extend Beant Singh’s visa.

The reunion comes after Pakistan and India decided to open the Kartarpur corridor.The move is intended to facilitate the visit of Sikh pilgrims to Kartarpur Sahib.

Washington, May 20: The United States recorded another 1,536 coronavirus deaths over the past 24 hours, the Johns Hopkins University tracker said.

That figure, tallied as of 8:30 pm (0030 GMT), raises to 91,845 the total number of COVID-19 deaths in the US.

The US tops the global rankings both for the highest death toll and the highest number of infections, with more than 1.5 million cases.

Washington, Jun 3: US President Donald Trump's administration on Tuesday announced investigations into foreign digital services taxes it says are aimed squarely at American tech firms.

Following a similar trade investigation against France last year, the US Trade Representative office now is looking into taxes in Britain and the European Union, as well as Indonesia, Turkey and India.

"President Trump is concerned that many of our trading partners are adopting tax schemes designed to unfairly target our companies," USTR Robert Lighthizer said in a statement.

"We are prepared to take all appropriate action to defend our businesses and workers against any such discrimination."

Washington opposes the efforts to tax revenues from online sales and advertising, saying they single out US tech giants like Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Netflix.

The US and France have agreed to negotiate till the end of the year over a digital services tax Paris approved in 2019, after USTR found them to be discriminating and threatened retaliatory duties of up to 100 percent on French imports such as champagne and camembert cheese.

Trump has embroiled the US in numerous trade disputes since taking office in 2017, including a months-long trade war with China that cooled with the signing of a partial deal in January.

New Delhi, July 1: In a terrific incident with chilling echoes of the 2015 Dadri mob lynching, a Muslim man, who was carrying meat, was savagely attacked by a mob belonging to a saffron outfit in the presence of in BJP ruled Haryana on the eve of Eid al-Adha. 

The incident occurred at around 9 a.m. on Friday, July 31 at Badshahpur village in Haryana’s Gurgaon, when Lukman was transporting meat in a pic-kup truck. 

The attack was captured on mobile phones by onlookers and the video clips of the incident are now spreading on social media. 

A group of saffronite cow vigilantes chased the truck for about 8 km managed waylay it. Lukman, who was driving the truck was pulled out and brutally assaulted on the suspicion that he was transporting cow meat.

Just like Dadri, the police were faster at sending the meat to a lab for testing than catching any one of the suspects. One of the assailants - Pradeep Yadav- has been arrested. 

After being beating to an inch of his life, Lukman was bundled into the pick-up truck and taken back to Gurgaon's Badshahpur village where the goons started thrashing him again.

This is when the police stepped in and stopped them - only to find the assailants fearless enough to even take on them.

Lukman was taken to a hospital and the police filed a case against "unidentified individuals" even though the video of the incident recorded by witnesses shows the faces of the assailants.

The owner of the vehicles said that the meat was buffalo and he has been in the business for 50 years.

The police have so far refused to give a statement on record on the incident and explain their inaction as seen on video.
