Bengaluru, Aug 14: Senior BJP?leader K?S?Eshwarappa, who recently had created a storm by trying to revive the Sangolli Rayanna Brigade of the Kuruba community, has now held a meeting with Dalit and OBC?leaders in the city.

eshuThe move is seen as a game plan by Eshwarappa to emerge as an Ahinda leader (Kannada acronym for minorities, backward classes and dalits) to consolidate his position in the party ahead of 2018 Assembly polls in Karnataka. He is indirectly challenging the style of functioning of state BJP?president B?S?Yeddyurappa.

On Saturday, he went a step further and held a meeting with leaders of the brigade at his office in the Vidhana Soudha. It was held to coincide with the executive committee meeting of the party's Bengaluru urban unit. A full-fledged office is provided to Eshwarappa in the Vidhana Soudha in his capacity as Leader of the Opposition of the Legislative Council. He was not an invitee for the party's meeting.

Eshwarappa said OBC?and dalit leaders were leaning towards the BJP and he was only providing them a platform to express their views.

“The Congress had considered OBC and dalits as their ancestral property and used them as its vote bank,” Eshwarappa told reporters. However, he said he was not going to use the BJP banner for holding Ahinda meetings.

“I cannot use the party banner because religious leaders will hesitate to associate with a political party. Not less than 35 seers are supporting my efforts. Finally, my exercise will help the BJP,” he added.

He claimed that those leaders who had supported Siddaramaiah to emerge as an Ahinda leader were now supporting him.

Asked whether he was trying to challenge the leadership of Yeddyurappa, Eshwarappa said, “Yeddyurappa is our leader. I have no intention of emerging as a rebel leader.” He said he would attend the core committee meeting convened by Yeddyurappa on August 16.

The Sangolli Rayanna Brigade is planning to launch an enrolment drive soon and hold conventions across the state.

New Delhi, Jun 4: The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought response from Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, on a plea challenging his election in 2019 from Hassan Lok Sabha constituency as a joint candidate of the Janata Dal Secular and the Congress.

A bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and Hrishiksh Roy issued notice to the returned candidate from the high-profile constituency on an appeal challenging the Karnataka High Court's order by which an election petition against his win was dismissed.

In the proceedings held through video-conferencing, the top court issued notice and tagged the appeal filed by G Devarajegowda for hearing with other similar pending plea filed by the BJP candidate on the issue.

Mr Devarajegowda in the plea said that his election petition was dismissed by the High Court on "procedural irregularities". The plea said that Mr Prajwal had resorted to unfair and corrupt practices and his election should be set aside.

It said the High Court did not consider the fact that by dismissing the election petition, it was running a risk of having a representative in parliament who has not got the maximum number of valid votes.

The petitioner, an advocate by profession, sought a declaration of rival BJP candidate, A Manju, as the winner for having secured the maximum number of valid votes.

A separate appeal was earlier filed by Mr Manju against the High Court order and the top court had already issued notice to the retuned candidate on that.

Mr Manju had challenged the 2019 election of Mr Prajwal on the ground that there was allegedly non-disclosure of assets held by him in his election affidavit.

Mr Prajwal was declared winner with 6,76,606 votes. Mr Manju came first runner-up with 5,35,282 votes.

Mangaluru, July 23: Lavanya Ballal, national co-coordinator for social media department of Indian National Congress, has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of destroying the nation by misleading the youth.

In an interview with a regional Kannada news paper, the Dakshina Kannada based activist, lamented that instead of using social media for the welfare of the nation, BJP leaders used it to spread lies for their political gains.

On one hand BJP fooled people through false promises and colourful dialogues, while on the other hand it misled crores of youth by spreading fake news, twisted facts and false information, she said.

Ms Ballal went on to accuse BJP of following the footsteps of the British. “BJP is following all the methods employed by the British invaders to divide the people of India and make them hate each other,” she said.

She said that Congress always used the social media for the benefit of the country. If the new generation realises this fact, the country will once again turn its direction towards development, she asserted.
