2018 polls likely to be CM’s last election; may contest from Chamundeshwari

Mysuru, Jul 16: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that the 2018 polls would be is "most probably" his last election and indicated that he may switch to Chamundeshwari which gave him political rebirth by electing him in the crucial bypoll of 2006.siddaramaiah

“The upcoming election is likely to be my last, and thus, I want to contest from Chamundeshwari, from where I have won five times,” Siddaramaiah said while speaking to reporters at his residence in the city on Saturday.

However, he said, the high command will decide on the candidature of his son Dr Yathindra from Varuna Assembly constituency.

The CM sought to take on the BJP on its Hindutva plank, asserting that he is also a Hindu. "I'm also a Hindu. What is my name? It is Sidda-Rama. I'm also 100% Hindu," the CM said, accusing the BJP of pushing its Hindutva agenda in Karnataka.

Referring to communal tension in Dakshina Kannada, he said it is an attempt to polarize voters in an election year, and asserted that he is also a Hindu but unlike the BJP, he is not trying to divide the people. The BJP is trying to replicate its success in Uttar Pradesh by polarizing voters, which the CM said will not be allowed in Karnataka.

"BJP leaders are visiting Karnataka and calling themselves 'vistarakas'. What does it mean? It is extension of the Hindutva agenda," he said.

Bengaluru, Jun 12: Karnataka on Saturday reported 209 discharges, as the state confirmed 308 new cases of COVID-19 and three related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 6,824 and the death toll to 81.

With the 14 new cases, the total number of covid cases in Udupi district alone today reached 1005. Dakshina Kannada today reported 30 cases and the tally mounted to 263. 

Today highest cases were reported from Kalaburgi (67), followed by Yadgir (52), Bidar (42) and Bengaluru Urban (31). More details to follow.

Bengaluru, Apr 14: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday demanded that BS Yediyurappa-led government should cut down on 'unnecessary' expenditures to mobilise funds to fight against coronavirus.

"Yediyurappa government needs to cut down on unwanted expenses which government is spending on several things in order to save the taxpayers money to fight against coronavirus," said Siddaramaiah here in a press conference.

He alleged that the ruling state government is indulged in corruption due to which the government is running bankrupt, adding that instead of mobilising funds, Yediyurappa government is only concentrating on auction of Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) sites.
Siddaramaiah claimed that the "BDA was already in loss".

"The present government does not have money due to its involvement in corruption. The Karnataka government must concentrate on cutting expenses and there is no need to waste money on unwanted things including vehicles for board and corporations chiefs," said the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader.

"Yediyurappa government has decided to auction more than 12,000 BDA sites to get benefit of Rs 15,000 crore, rather than fullfiling requirements of people of the state at the time of coronavirus crisis," he said.

In Karnataka, 247 people have tested positive for coronavirus, including 59 cured and discharged and 6 deaths, according to the Union Health Ministry.

Bengaluru, Jan 25: Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Friday, hit out at JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy, accusing the former Chief Minister of pursuing "vote bank" politics and advised him to move to Pakistan.

"It is better to move to Pakistan...if he shows so much love towards Pakistan, why should he live in India? He should not do dual politics like this. He wants to be fair to Pakistan and also to India," Sriramulu said.

Terming it as "double standards", the Minister said: "From so many years, you have been doing vote bank politics. You have to understand one thing...you are the son of former Prime Minister and also a former Chief Minister. By giving these type of statements, I think it will hurt the citizens of India. If you want to do vote bank politics I must suggest that it is better to leave the country."

His statement comes after Kumaraswamy took a jibe at BJP over its "obsession with Pakistan".
