240 typos, factual errors in school textbooks, admits minister

Bengaluru, Feb 10: Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanveer Sait on Friday conceded that there were as many as 240 typographical and factual errors introduced in school textbooks distributed during the current academic year.

Replying to Tara Anuradha (BJP) in the Legislative Council, Sait said that his department was, however, taking measures to ensure that the same mistakes aren't repeated the coming academic year.

Tara attacked the Education department for its lackadaisical attitude. She said that the quality of education had taken a hit, because of the department's shoddy job in printing and distributing textbooks.

Stating that the tender process for printing textbooks had been initiated, Sait said that last year there was a severe issue of paper availability, which had caused the delay.

Practice-cum-activity book

The minister said that the department would distribute practice-cum-activity books along with textbooks to students, to improve their creativity.

He said that such a decision was taken after the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) noted that the state syllabus textbooks in Karnataka were not "learner-centric" -- thereby not encouraging creativity among students.

Fresh rules

Sait said that the state government was in the process of finalising fresh rules for regulating the unauthorised fee structures and imposition of fines by private schools.

Replying to P R Ramesh (Congress), Sait said amendments had been introduced to the Karnataka Educational Institutions Rules.

The move was to check exploitation of parents and students. The minister said that District Education Regulatory Authorities had been constituted in all districts, which were addressing the problems of parents and students.

Sait said that around 36,000 classrooms in government schools, found to be in dilapidated conditions, would be demolished and rebuilt. The department would also be constructing an additional 19,000 classrooms, he added.

Replying to K T Srikantegowda (JD-S), Sait said that Rs 243 crore unspent MLA funds (between 2002-2012) would be utilised for carrying out the repair and reconstruction works.

Bengaluru, Aug 5: A red alert has been issued in several districts in Karnataka due to heavy rainfall in the state since last two-three days, the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday.

"Red alert has been announced in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Chickamagalur, Shivamogga, Kodagu and Hassan, due to heavy rainfall in the region from last two-three days," CS Patil, Director, India Meteorological Department (IMD) Bengaluru said.

New Delhi, Apr 26: The Centre will bring back the Indian citizens stranded abroad due to the ban on arrival of international passenger aircraft, only if the respective states they belong to agree to allow them to come back home and make necessary arrangements to quarantine them after their return.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has started consultations with the State Governments on bringing back the Indians, who got stranded in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada and many other foreign countries due to the ban on arrival of international passenger aircraft to any airport in the country. The decision on facilitating their return to the country would be taken after getting feedback on preparedness of the States and the Union Territory to receive them following all required health precautions, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba said.

Gauba on Saturday had a video-conference with the Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories to review the implementation of the restrictions on travel and transport as well as the lockdown imposed across the country to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

Though the Government earlier either evacuated or facilitated the return of nearly 28000 Indians from a number of foreign countries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, it almost stopped doing so after the ban on arrival of international passenger aircraft was enforced on March 23 in the wake of the spurt in the number of COVID-19 cases in India.

Thousands of Indian students, tourists, professionals and others are stranded around the world, including in the countries, where respective governments had imposed lockdowns to contain the pandemic. They have been desperately requesting the government on social media to evacuate them.

Bengaluru, May 8: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has announced a special package for those involved in leather works, especially those who work on the roadside, informed the state's Deputy Chief Minister Govind M Karjol on Friday. 

The special package has been announced for cobblers and leather workers, who work on the roadside. 

The government has provided relief to 11,722 families at a rate of Rs 5,000 per family. These beneficiaries will be directly credited to their bank account through Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram Leather Industries Development Corporation.

This special package will help livelihoods for skilled workers, said the Deputy Chief Minister. He congratulated the Chief Minister on the declaration of this special package on behalf of the Department of Social Welfare.
