250 Muslim League activists set to join CPI(M) along with Abdulla Kunhi

Kasaragod, Jul 4: In a major blow to Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in the coastal district, a senior party leader, along with 250-odd supporters, has decided to join hands with the Communist Party of India (Marxist), terming the Left party a better ‘secular face’ in the emerging national political scenario.cpimiuml

Former IUML district general secretary K.K. Abdulla Kunhi and former party’s Manjeswaram Assembly constituency councillor M.A. Umbu Munnur, along with their supporters, will join the CPI(M) in the presence of State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan at Kumbla on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Mr. Kunhi said the IUML in recent times was found to have sidelined leaders of tall stature in its bid to put in place moneyed, influential and young blood, leading to internal bickering and revolt within the party.

The IUML had come under the clout of the sand mafia and other vested business groups, he said.

However, IUML district president Cherkalam Abdulla said that the development would in no way affect his party. “Mr. Abdulla Kunhi is not a straightforward person and his leaving the party would have little impact on the party base in the district.”

Mangaluru, Jan 7: The city police arrested a youth on charge of spreading messages against political leaders through WhatsApp and allegedly issuing life threats warnings against them.

The accused has been identified as Anwar, a resident of Peruvai village in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada. He was working in Qatar.

On Monday, Yathish from Vittal filed a complaint and based on that police arrested Anwar.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Deputy Chief Minister Dr.CN Ashwathnarayan instructed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner Manjunatha Prasad to set up a separate high-level committee to ascertain the exact cause of coronavirus-related deaths in the state.

He spoke to reporters after a meeting with Prasad on Tuesday.

"The committee, headed by senior officials will audit the reason for the increase in death cases. Has there been a death due to treatment delay? Or are there any shortcomings in the treatment process?" the deputy chief minister said.

He pointed out that based on the report, the committee should try to correct the deficiency and reduce the death rate.

"How many beds are in which hospital? How many patients are on a ventilator? How many have gone home from the hospital? Etc. All information needs to be updated online at the moment. He suggested that this information should be made available to the public online," Ashwaththanarayana said.

Stating that some hospitals are not giving details about the number of beds correctly, he instructed the commissioners to take legal action if differences in their data are found.

He said that there is a shortage of ASHA workers in the city and it needs to be hired immediately.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, there are 74,477 active COVID-19 cases in Karnataka and the death toll in the state is at 2,594.

Bengaluru, May 24: Karnataka Tourism Minister CT Ravi said that coronavirus lockdown has severely marred the tourism industry in the state and the government will revive it in a phased manner.

"It would be beneficial if hotels are opened keeping in mind few restrictions. At present, the tourism industry has fallen flat making it very difficult to promote tourism in the state," Ravi said.

"Our department has planned to promote tourism in a phased manner. In the first phase, we would focus on native tourism; then in the second phase, we will promote inter-district travel; in the third phase, we will put weight behind inter-state tourism and in the fourth phase, we would be promoting international travel and tourism," he added.

Karnataka's COVID-19 count surges to 1,958 with 216 new cases of the virus reported in the last 24 hours, said the Health Department in a bulletin on Saturday.

Out of the total number of cases, 1,307 patients are active cases and 608 patients have been discharged. The total number of fatalities due to COVID-19 in the state has risen to 42.
