27 new cities including Mangaluru make it to Smart City list

Mangaluru, Sep 20: Mangaluru, Hubbali-Dharwad, Shivamogga and Tumkaru cites from south Indian state of Karnataka made it to the list of 27 Smart Cities that was announced on Tuesday.

1mangaluru PM Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi, Vadodara, Agra, Nagpur, Ajmer, Amritsar, Gwalior, Thane and Thanjavur are some of the other cities that have been named to be developed as smart cities. The 27 cities will require investment of Rs 66,883 crore.

So far, the urban development ministry has selected 60 cities in three rounds and has covered 27 states and Union Territories. Only nine more states and UTs are still to get on board including Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir.

1smartcity A maximum of five cities from Maharashtra have found place in the list of new cities that was released by Union urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday. Four cities, each from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, have made it to the list followed by three from Uttar Pradesh and two each from Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan. One city each from Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, Sikkim and Nagaland has been selected in this round.

According to urban development ministry's estimate, Rs 1.44 lakh crore investment has been proposed by the 60 cities that have been selected so far under their smart city plans. Officials said that 82 projects are already under implementation in the first batch of 20 smart cities and another 113 projects will soon take off the ground. Naidu said in the next one year, one would get to see smart cities taking shape.

Under the Smart City mission, the Central government provides Rs 500 crore for each city over five years with states making matching contribution. The rest of resources will come from loans, public private partnership (PPP), convergence of various schemes of Central and state governments besides own resources of urban local bodies.

So the ministry has tied up multi-lateral lending from agencies DFID of UK and JICA, who have committed $ 500 million each. Similarly, ADB and World Bank have committed $ 1 billion. The New Development Bank (BRICS Bank) has proposed to provide finance for projects up to $ 500 million per city.

We need SAFE CITIES before SMART CITIES. Accordingly, we need SAFE MANGALORE before SMART MANGALORE.

Once, the people feel and realise that MANGALORE is SAFE, then definitely Smart projects can follow.

Just projecting Smart Mangalore without SAFETY cannot be justified.

As somebody said, we need smart Ministers and smart government authorities to maintain the SAFETY and WELFARE of the MANGALOREAN people

Its a great news for Mangaloreans.

No need Smart cities , We need smart ministers who can take care of the problems of the society in a smarter way rather then fooling and lying to the society.

people of these so called smart cities will pay heavily in the form of tax. This govt is creating tax terrorism against common people and feeding the global tycoons.

I read many articles about smart cities and finally came to a conclusion that i cant understand it fully.

Streets in Dakshina Kannada completely deserted on Sunday

Mangaluru, Jul 19: In the wake of the COVID-19 lockdown imposed till July 23, streets in the Dakshina Kannada district here bore a deserted look today (Sunday) morning.

The state government had allowed relaxation hours between 8 am to 11 am in the week-long total shutdown. However today there was no relaxation.

All shops including those selling essential commodities were also seen closed in the district today. Besides, barricades were also seen stationed at different junctures on the road.

As per Karnataka's COVID-19 information portal, a total of 59,652 coronavirus cases have been reported in the state, including 36,631 active cases and 21,775 recoveries. So far, 1,240 people have died due to the infection in the state.

Dakshina Kannada so far recorded 3,311 covid-19 positive cases and 75 deaths.

COVID-19 positive cases in Karnataka surge to 371

Bengaluru, Apr 18: With 12 fresh cases of the COVID-19 infection, including one woman, the total number of novel coronavirus cases in Karnataka surged to 371 on Saturday.

The sources said that as many as three new positive cases were reported from Mysuru district, followed by two each from Kalaburagi, Bhagalkote, one each case from Vijayapura, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag and Mandya, districts on Saturday.

Police issue warning amidst lockdown in Mangaluru; impact in Udupi too

Mangaluru/Udupi, Mar 23: The coastal district of Dakshina Kannada including the city of Mangaluru today refused to return to normalcy from yesterday’s Janata Curfew, as the government imposed lockdown in the district till the month end to contain the Covid-19 caused by the deadly novel coronavirus.

The lockdown coupled with the prohibitory orders under Section 144 has forced all the commercial establishments barring few to remain closed in the district.

The police started issuing stern warning to the people through loudspeakers against venturing out of their homes unnecessarily. People are allowed to move only in case of any emergency or basic needs.

The police warning came after a few people started ignoring the lockdown and ban orders. A few private buses also were seen plying on the roads in the morning.

Under the proibitory orders, the district administration banned from venturing out of their homes except in case of emergency or extreme necessity. All public programmes including religious ceremonies, cultural programmes also are banned. All shops, commercial establishments, workshops and godowns with other unessential goods are supposed to remain closed. Bus service, both government and private, are to suspended. Mass prayers and religious ceremonies are not allowed in temples, mosques and churches. Beaches and other tourist spots are closed.

Udupi

The lockdown in 9 districts of Karnataka has forced many private buses in Udupi to stay off the roads for second day on Monday. Some buses plying between Udupi to Kundapur have resumed service a day after Janata Curfew, with very minimum occupancy.

Due to lockdown in Dakshina Kannada, all services operating from Mangaluru to Udupi, Manipal, and Kundapur have been suspended till the month end. Buses on Karkala-Udupi route have also stopped their operations.
