27 new cities including Mangaluru make it to Smart City list

Mangaluru, Sep 20: Mangaluru, Hubbali-Dharwad, Shivamogga and Tumkaru cites from south Indian state of Karnataka made it to the list of 27 Smart Cities that was announced on Tuesday.

1mangaluru PM Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi, Vadodara, Agra, Nagpur, Ajmer, Amritsar, Gwalior, Thane and Thanjavur are some of the other cities that have been named to be developed as smart cities. The 27 cities will require investment of Rs 66,883 crore.

So far, the urban development ministry has selected 60 cities in three rounds and has covered 27 states and Union Territories. Only nine more states and UTs are still to get on board including Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir.

1smartcity A maximum of five cities from Maharashtra have found place in the list of new cities that was released by Union urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday. Four cities, each from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, have made it to the list followed by three from Uttar Pradesh and two each from Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan. One city each from Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, Sikkim and Nagaland has been selected in this round.

According to urban development ministry's estimate, Rs 1.44 lakh crore investment has been proposed by the 60 cities that have been selected so far under their smart city plans. Officials said that 82 projects are already under implementation in the first batch of 20 smart cities and another 113 projects will soon take off the ground. Naidu said in the next one year, one would get to see smart cities taking shape.

Under the Smart City mission, the Central government provides Rs 500 crore for each city over five years with states making matching contribution. The rest of resources will come from loans, public private partnership (PPP), convergence of various schemes of Central and state governments besides own resources of urban local bodies.

So the ministry has tied up multi-lateral lending from agencies DFID of UK and JICA, who have committed $ 500 million each. Similarly, ADB and World Bank have committed $ 1 billion. The New Development Bank (BRICS Bank) has proposed to provide finance for projects up to $ 500 million per city.

We need SAFE CITIES before SMART CITIES. Accordingly, we need SAFE MANGALORE before SMART MANGALORE.

Once, the people feel and realise that MANGALORE is SAFE, then definitely Smart projects can follow.

Just projecting Smart Mangalore without SAFETY cannot be justified.

As somebody said, we need smart Ministers and smart government authorities to maintain the SAFETY and WELFARE of the MANGALOREAN people

No need Smart cities , We need smart ministers who can take care of the problems of the society in a smarter way rather then fooling and lying to the society.

people of these so called smart cities will pay heavily in the form of tax. This govt is creating tax terrorism against common people and feeding the global tycoons.

I read many articles about smart cities and finally came to a conclusion that i cant understand it fully.

Udupi: Entrepreneur killed, woman cortically injured as car plunges into tank

Udupi, June 21: An entrepreneur lost his life after the car he was driving veered off the road and plunged into a roadside tank near Barkuru in Brahmavar taluk of Udupi district today.

The deceased has been identified as Santosh Shetty, a resident of Vakwadi in Kundapur taluk. He is the proprietor of Laxmi Glass and Plywood, Koteshwara.

A woman, identified as Shweta, who was also on board the car suffered critical injuries.

The mishap occurred when the duo was heading to Vakwadi from Brahmavar in Hyundai Car sedan car.

Shetty lost control over his vehicle while negotiating a curve at Chaulikere and the car plunged off the road as there was no barricade.

Even though local residents began rescue operation immediately, Shetty breathed his last on the spot. Shweta was rescued and shifted to a hospital in Manipal for treatment.

RSS hardliner arrested for hurling bombs at RSS office to create unrest

Kannur, Jan 23: A member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has been arrested for attempting to create unrest in Kerala by hurling crude bombs at RSS office and police picket. The miscreants had reportedly planned to pass the blame on others.

The bomb attack took place of January 16 in Kerala’s Kannur. The accused Prabesh, an RSS hardliner, was arrested from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

According to the Kerala police Prabesh hurled steel bombs towards the police picket in front of Kathirur Manoj Smrithi Kendram, an RSS office.

"He threw bombs during the wee hours of January 16 morning. Following the arrest he has confessed that his aim was RSS office. Kannur, being politically sensitive region, any attack on political party offices will be regarded as an act by the opponent," Kathirur SI Nijeesh said.

"We had a police picket in the region for a few months now. We are assuming he wanted to create unrest in the area by removing the police from the spot. We could contain the situation because of the CCTV visuals. He was identified immediately after the incident. Following the attack he went to Coimbatore and was hiding there. Our team nabbed him from Coimbatore," he said.

The police have also said that the accused Prabesh had many criminal cases pending against him including those under Explosive Substances Act, 1883. He was nabbed by a team lead by Kathirur SI Nijeesh, CPO Rohith and Vijeesh.

The RSS office in the region is named after Kathirur Manoj a senior karyakarta (worker) who was allegedly killed by the CPI(M) activists in 2014. Kathirur Manoj was the prime accused in the attempt to murder of senior CPI(M) leader P Jayarajan in 1999.

Mangaluru: International kite festival to be special attraction of Karavali Utsav

Mangaluru, Jan 4 The International Kite Festival, will be the main attraction of the Karavali Utsav being held here from January 10-19.

Deputy Commissioner Sindhu Roopesh said on Saturday that a variety of cultural programmes are scheduled on the occasion of Karavali Utsav being organized by the DK District Administration at the Karavali Utsav grounds, Kadri Park and Panambur Beach.

Cultural programmes will be presented by budding local artistes of State, National and International fame. All facilities for the cultural programmes will be set up at the Kadri park and Karavali Utsav grounds.

The programme will begin with a cultural procession from Nehru Maidan on 10 January followed by the Inauguration at the Karavali Utsav grounds.
