286 sensitive, 78 highly sensitive polling stations in Uttara Kannada; 92 booths have no phones

Karwar, Mar 13: A total of 1,922 polling stations would be set up in the six Assembly segments of Uttara Kannada district and two Assembly segments of Belagavi district that fall under the Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha constituency.

Uttara Kannada Lok Sabha constituency comprises the Assembly segments of Kittur and Khanapur (Belagavi district), Haliyal, Karwar, Kumta, Bhatkal, Sirsi and Yallapur (Uttar Kannada).

Deputy Commissioner of Uttar Kannada and Election Officer K. Harish Kumar told presspersons in Karwar on Monday that the constituency had a total of 15,34,036 voters comprising 7,78,350 male voters, 7,55,678 female voters and eight voters of the third gender.

He said that adequate arrangements would be made to ensure free and fair polls in the constituency and there would be model polling stations painted in blue wherever the number of specially abled voters was high. There would also be transport facility for them, ramps and wheelchairs at the polling stations and Braille facility for the visually impaired, he said.

The constituency would have 12 Sakhi polling stations painted in pink where only female officers would be deployed on duty.

In the wake of introduction of VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail), there would be an additional staff at each polling station making it a total of 7,472 officers on poll duty, he said.

Among the 1,922 polling stations in the constituency, 92 polling stations were located in such places where there was no telephone connectivity (either land or mobile phone).

While in some places, wireless sets would be used, in other places, two runners would be appointed, Mr. Harish Kumar said. Superintendent of Police of Uttara Kannada Vinayak Patil said that 286 polling booths had been considered as sensitive and 78 as highly sensitive.

He said that a total of 1,119 cases had been registered against 314 out of the 317 persons in the district identified as persons with criminal background.

This apart, it had been proposed to invoke provisions of Goonda Act against one person and extern five.

Of the total 8,579 licensed guns in the district, 2,000 guns had been deposited in the respective police stations, he said.

In case of election malpractices, people could file complaint by calling the toll free number 1950 or on Whatsapp number 9483511015, Mr. Harish Kumar said, while appealing to the public to also make use of ECI mobile application, cVIGIL.

Mangaluru, May 9: An Indian expatriate worker from Karnataka’s coastal district of Dakshina Kannada died of in Dubai after he suffered a cardiac arrest.

The deceased has been identified as Yashwant, 37, hailing from Malali Kajila House in Tenkulipady village, on the outskirts of Mangaluru.

He was working as an air-conditioner mechanic in Dubai for the last two years.

As per sources, he suffered a heart attack. However, the exact cause of this death is yet to be known.

Bengaluru, Jul 1: Karnataka government has announced a complete lockdown on Sundays till August 2. "There shall be complete lockdown on Sundays from July 5 and followed by next four Sundays till August 2," stated the government. 

"However, essential activities allowed during night curfew will be permitted during Sunday lockdown too. Marriages already fixed on Sundays will be permitted as per norms," also said.

The government further ordered, "All government offices, Boards and Corporations, except those operating and maintaining essential services, shall remain closed on all Saturdays till the second week of August."

Employers should ensure that the Aarogya Setu app is downloaded and used by the employees. The app enables the identification of potential risk of infection,

Regarding Sunday Lockdown, it said, there shall be complete lockdown on Sundays with effect from 5th July, 2020, and followed by next 4 Sundays till 2nd August, 2020.

However, the essential activities as above permitted during Night Curfew shall be permitted during the Sunday lockdown also.

Lockdown in Containment Zones in Karnataka

Lockdown will continue to remain in force in the Containment zones. In the Containment Zones, only essential activities shall be allowed. There shall be strict perimeter control to ensure that there is no movement of people in or out of these zones, except for medical emergencies and for facilitating supply of essential goods and services. In the Containment Zones, there shall be intensive contact tracing, house-to-house surveillance, and other clinical interventions, as required.

All vulnerable persons, individuals above 65, persons with comorbidities, pregnant women and children below the age of 10 years are advised to stay at home, except for health and essential purposes.

Karnataka saw 947 new coronavirus cases, including 503 cases from Bengaluru Urban, taking the total number of cases to 15,242. Death toll has jumped to 246 after 20 deaths were reported on Tuesday, according to the data released by Union Health Ministry.

Gokak, Jul 25: A JMFC magistrate here issued summons to the Chief minister B S Yediyurappa in relation to a complaint for the alleged violation of election code of conduct, during by-elections to the Gokak Assembly seat held last year.

According to official sources, a complaint had been registered against Chief minister B S Yediyurappa during the election campaign, under the People Representative Act, for allegedly wooing voters during electioneering.

The Gokak Police, who had investigated the case, however had submitted a 'B' report to the court letting off the Chief minister from the charges.

However the Magistrate, rejecting the Police report, had maintained that there exists prima facie case against the accused and issued summons to appear before the court on September one, the sources added.
