2nd Test: Vijay, Pujara deny SA pacers as India enjoy upper hand before bad light

December 27, 2013

SA_pacersDurban, Dec 27: The light kept falling as M Vijay continued to shine. The Chennai opener has been under a bit of pressure of late, but his unbeaten innings of 91 might just act as the perfect breather.

As he closed in on his first overseas century, umpires Rod Tucker and Steve Davis said that the pace bowlers couldn't operate in such fading light. The South African skipper Graeme Smith didn't need a second invitation and took his troops out, as India finished the day at 181/1.

There were still 29 overs of play left and it could easily have got tougher for the hosts because of the way Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara (58 batting) batted and put up 140 runs for the second wicket. While Pujara was his usual composed self, starting from where he left off at Johannesburg, Vijay's innings had glimpses of the flair that he has often shown in the subcontinent.

To his advantage, the 'Indianness' of Durban seemed to have crept into its Test pitch as well. There was hardly any movement, the pace was slow, and the Indian batsmen looked well equipped to handle anything that was thrown at them.

The best thing about the Indian batsmen during these two Tests has been their desire to spend time in the middle. Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan (29) were ready to leave outside the off-stump in the first hour. Dhawan has a distinctive way of leaving balls outside off.

He always looked to play inside the line of the delivery, so the ones moving away naturally missed his outside edge. But anything that was pitched up or was close to his leg-stump was promptly dealt with.

Dhawan and Vijay played out the first hour and it seemed that both the openers are destined for more. But Morne Morkel got Dhawan to drive away from his body off the first ball after drinks and induced an edge to be caught at slips.

Morkel, who sustained an ankle injury at Wanderers, was cleared to play the match only on Thursday morning after he passed a fitness test. But he was easily South Africa's best bowler. He kept bowling short of length and extracted some bounce making it difficult for the Indian batsmen. To their credit, they didn't give it away.

Vijay grew in confidence even as he was very choosy in his shot making. But he has the gift of timing and some of the shots that he played both on the on and off-side were a real treat. Dale Steyn, who was a shadow of his real self in the first session, looked much better when he came in to bowl in the middle session. He worked up good pace, bowled a little short and asked a few tough questions to Vijay and Pujara under fading light. But the Indian duo played with soft hands and got it down to irritate the pacer.

Skipper Graeme Smith kept throwing the ball to Robin Peterson, brought in place of leggie Imran Tahir, but the left-armer could hardly make any impression. Vijay and Pujara used their feet and tucked him away for some easy runs as SA kept running out of ideas.

Smith had the option of employing spinners from both ends when the light started fading, but he didn't want to take the chance.

Ashwin dropped

The Indian team dropped offie R Ashwin and brought in left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja. "Ashwin has done nothing wrong, just that Jadeja is a very good bowler himself and is better suited for these conditions," Indian bowling coach Joe Dawes said.

Feb 4: India captain Virat Kohli on Tuesday said the death of NBA legend Kobe Bryant in a helicopter crash has impacted his outlook towards life, which he feels, is sometimes taken for granted in pursuit of control over the future.

Bryant, a two-time Olympic gold-medallist and one of the most decorated basketball players of all time, died in a helicopter crash last month along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, who was also a budding hoopster.

"Firstly, it was a shock to everyone. I grew up watching those NBA games in the morning and watching what he did on court. But when someone that you have looked up to in some ways, passes away like that, it does put things in perspective," Kohli said on the eve of the first ODI against New Zealand here.

"...at the end of the day, life can be so fickle. It's so unpredictable. I think a lot of the times we get too caught up in the pressures of what we have to do tomorrow...we really forget living life and enjoying life and just appreciating and being grateful for the life we have," he added.

Kohli said a tragedy like this makes one realise that nothing can be more important than enjoying every moment of existence.

"...it did put things in perspective for me massively. It just makes you feel like not wanting to have control of things in front of you all the time, and just embracing life and appreciating it.

"You start looking at things from a different point of view suddenly and you want to enjoy every moment you're going through. You realise that what you're doing at the end of the day is not the most important thing. The most important thing is life itself," Kohli signed off.

Mumbai, Mar 10: The addition of two new members, including the chairman, in the national selection committee, has not changed the panel's stance on M S Dhoni, who will "have to perform" in the upcoming IPL to be considered for T20 World Cup selection, a top BCCI official told PTI.

The Sunil Joshi-led selection panel met for the first time in Ahmedabad on Sunday to pick a rather "straightforward" squad for the three ODIs against South Africa beginning in Dharamsala on March 12.

Fit-again Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shikhar Dhawan made their way back into the side.

Joshi's predecessor MSK Prasad had made it clear that the team has moved on from Dhoni and he has to first play to be considered for selection.

Dhoni, who has not played since the World Cup semi-final loss to New Zealand in July, will be making his highly-awaited comeback in the IPL beginning March 29.

"It was a pretty straightforward selection meeting and since Dhoni was obviously not in the reckoning this time (for South Africa series), there was no formal talk about his future," a BCCI source told PTI.

"He will be back in the reckoning only if he has a good IPL. And why only him, there are so many senior and young players who will play in the IPL. If they do well, they are ought to be considered too. So, you could see some surprise inclusions," he said.

The T20 World Cup will be played in Australia in October-November and the games India play after the IPL leading up to the mega event will also be a factor in the final squad selection.

"But the performance in the IPL could be the clincher," the source added.

Head coach Ravi Shastri too has hinted that Dhoni could be back after a good IPL but his future remains a subject of intense speculation as he has not played a game in more than seven months.

With his heir apparent Rishabh Pant not setting the world on fire and K L Rahul being groomed into a full-time wicketkeeper-batsman, Dhoni's comeback cannot be ruled out.

His countless fans will finally get to see him in action when he leads Chennai Super Kings against defending champions Mumbai Indians in the IPL opener at Wankhede Stadium on March 29.

New Delhi Jul 30: After Pakistan cricketer Umar Akmal's ban was reduced to 18 months, Danish Kaneria criticised Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) policies and said that the 'zero tolerance policy' applies only to him.

"Zero Tolerance policy only apply on Danish Kaneria not on others, can anybody answer the reason why I get life ban not others, Are policy applies only on cast, colour, and powerful background. I am Hindu and proud of it that's my background and my dharma," Kaneria tweeted.

Earlier on Wednesday, Akmal's three-year suspension was reduced to 18 months by an independent adjudicator, former Pakistan Supreme Court judge, Faqir Mohammad Khokhar.

On April 27, the Chairman of the Disciplinary Panel, Justice (retd) Fazal-e-Miran Chauhan, had banned the wicketkeeper-batsman for three years after finding him guilty of breaching the PCB's Anti-Corruption Code in two separate incidents.

Akmal, on May 19, filed an appeal against the three-year ban imposed on him, seeking a reduction in the duration of the sanction. He will remain suspended effectively from February 2020 till August 2021.

The batsman said he might appeal again to get the ban "reduced further".

"I am thankful to the judge for listening to my lawyers properly. I will decide about the remaining sentence and try to get it reduced further. For now I am not satisfied and will consult my lawyers and family how to take this ahead," ESPNcricinfo had quoted Akmal as saying.

"There are many players before me who made mistakes and just look at what they got and what I got. So all I say right now is thank you very much," he had added.

On the other hand, Kaneria was found guilty of spot-fixing while playing for English club Essex and was banned from the sport.

Earlier this month, Pakistan's cricket governing body 'advised' Kaneria to approach England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) if he wants to play domestic cricket after the cricketer had appealed to the PCB, seeking permission to play domestic cricket.
