3 cops suspended for ‘royal treatment’ for accused in Bhaskar Shetty murder case

Udupi, Aug 22: The Udupi district police on Monday suspended three police personnel for alleged dereliction of duty in bringing the three accused in the Bhaskar Shetty murder case in an air-conditioned Multi Utility Vehicle (MUV) from the prison in Mangaluru to the Court Complex here in Udupi.

The three accused — Rajeshwari Shetty, Navneet Shetty and Niranjan Bhat — were being brought from the prison in Mangaluru to be produced in court here for hearing in the case on Monday.

Sanjeev M. Patil, Superintendent of Police, said that the three police personnel, Sudhakar, Assistant Reserve Police, Sub-Inspector, Renuka, woman police constable, and Salman Khan, civil police constable, have been suspended based on a preliminary enquiry by the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Udupi Sub Division.

They have been suspended pending detailed departmental enquiry, he said.

The visuals of them being brought in the air-conditioned MUV were telecast on some Kannada news channels.

Bhaskar Shetty, a NRI businessman, went missing from his house here on July 28, 2016, and his mother Gulabi Shetty lodged a missing complaint at the Manipal police station on July 29, 2016. The police arrested his wife Rajeshwari Shetty and their son Navneet Shetty on the charge of murdering him.

Kasaragod, Jul 8: A 48-year-old man, who died on Tuesday, has tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

A native of nearby Mogral Puthur in Kasaragod district, Abdul Rahmn was running a business in Karnataka’s Hubli since long time.

He had recently returned to his hometown from Karnataka through Talapady border on the outskirts of Mangaluru.

Sources said, despite the man having acute fever, the authorities at the Talapady border not only took any action including informing the concerned, but allowed him to cross over the border in a vehicle.

He was rushed to Kasargod General Hospital soon after returning. Those who had accompanied him from Karnataka to Kerala are now under ouarantine.

Bengaluru, Jul 30: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palika (BBMP) on Wednesday issued a notice restricting the sacrifice of animals during Bakrid or other religious occasions in certain places.

This year Eid al-Adha or Bakra eid will be celebrated on August 1.

"The administration has prohibited the sacrifice of animals in public roads, footpaths, inside or outside the premises of hospitals/nursing homes, schools and colleges, temples mosques, other religious places or public places," the BBMP said in a public notice.

Person or organisation violating the notice is liable to be prosecuted under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, stated BBMP.

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers. 

The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.

A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”

This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%). 

The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”

On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.
