3 dead, over 400 dengue, malaria cases detected in Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru, Jul 21: Three people died and as many as 404 cases of dengue and malaria have been detected in Dakshina Kannada district, officials said on Sunday.

Speaking to media persons, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district Sasikanth Senthil said, "Due to the peculiar weather condition in the city, we are seeing a spurt in the cases of fever since July 1. As many as 404 dengue and malaria cases have been detected, of which we've suspected three cases where dengue fatalities occurred."

"In the last three weeks, there is a spike in the number of patients admitted to various hospitals due to viral fever. The blood samples of patients suspected of having dengue have been collected and sent for testing," he added.

Senthil said the district administration and health department have constituted special teams to tackle the situation.

Data compiled by the Health Ministry has revealed that at least 8,058 positive dengue cases with eight deaths, and 14404 cases of Chikungunya have been reported from across the country till June 30 this year.

A total of 66,313 Malaria cases have also been reported from across the country till May 31 this year, according to available data.

Newsroom, Apr 23: During the ongoing lockdown in India so as to break the chain of Coronavirus infection, Islamic scholars across India are appealing Muslims to stay indoors and observe fasting with steadfastedness in the blessed month of Ramadan.

They have urged the people to offer taraveeh and other Namaz at homes, do iftar at home and enjoy with one's family only.

During Ramadan, social distancing would be of utmost importance in order to contain the disease, they urged. 

Shahi imams of Jama Masjid and Fatehpuri Masjid in the city have also appealed to Muslims to offer namaz during the holy month of Ramadan at home and follow lockdown guidelines to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Shivamogga, Jun 16: The Deputy Commissioner on Tuesday announced a ban on movement of heavy goods vehicles in the Agumbe ghat section between June 15 and October 15 as a precautionary measure, as there was possibility of landslides due to heavy rain during the monsoon season.

All trucks over 12 tonnes will be prohibited from passing through the ghat, DC K B Shivakumar said in a statement here.

The authorities have suggested two alternative routes for the movement of heavy freight vehicles – the Shimoga-Thirthahalli-Sringeri-Kerekatte-Karkala-Udupi-Mangaluru route and the Shimoga-Thirthahalli-Mastikette-Hulikal-Hosangadi-Siddapura-Udupi-Mangaluru route.

Puttur, Jul 7: A woman died after a wall of compound collapsed on her in Dakshina Kannada district on Tuesday, July 7. 

The victim was identified as Vasanti.

The wall got weakened due to heavy rain at Golithottu area in Puttur. Her body was sent to the post-mortem.

According to the police, the incident took place around 12.30pm when Vasanti was working in the backyard of her house.
