3 from Kerala feared killed in US apartment fire

Alapuzza, Oct 29: Three members of a family hailing from near Pattanakkad here were killed after a fire at their apartment complex in New Jersey . The news regarding their death was confirmed by their relatives at Putiyakavu on Friday morning.

Untitled-1Venugopal R, an assistant sub-inspector with the excise department, said his nephew Vinod B Damodaran, 44, wife Sreeja, 38, and their daughter Ardhra, 13, of Geethanjali House, Putiyakavu, Pattanakkad were killed after a fire in their apartment complex in New Jersey on Monday .

"Vinod, who was a research scientist at Rutgers University there, used to call us daily. But he did not call us from Monday .Though we tried to contact him, we could not reach him. Following this, we contacted the university officials and they informed us that the family was among the victims of the fire mishap. Their bodies were almost completely burned. So the process for a DNA test is progressing. Their bodies will be cremated there. We are trying to complete the legal procedures there as soon possible with the help of Indian Embassy, Norka-Roots and various Malayalee associations in USA," he said.

Vinod and family had visited Puthiyakavu in April. Vinod was working in Bombay and he and his family left Bombay for USA eight years ago. Ardhra was an eight standard student in New Jersey .

Mangaluru, Jan 27: JD(S) leader and former Labour Minister K Amarnath Shetty passed away at a private hospital in Mangaluru on Monday morning. He was 80. Shetty was unwell for sometime, and was admitted to the hospital a few days ago, family sources said.

Amarnath Shetty, a trustee of Alva's Education Foundation (AEF), had joined politics in 1965.

He became the president of Paladka Gram Panchayat and soon was elected as MLA from Moodbdri constituency in 1983. He won the successive elections held in the same constituency in 1987 and 1994. He had served as Tourism and later as Labour Minister.

Bengaluru, Jul 22: Yellow alert has been issued for Karnataka's Shivamogga, Chikmagalur, Hassan, and Kodagu for July 23 and 24.

Some areas of Bengaluru may receive light rainfall today, said CS Patil, Director, IMD Centre, Bengaluru.

He added that coastal areas of the state are very likely to experience rainfall from on July 23 and July 24, and that rainfall may increase July 24 onwards. Widespread rainfall is predicted for July 24th, 25th, and 26th.

Bengaluru, Apr 1: The state government has identified five districts, including Dakshina Kannada, as 'cluster zones' or 'Red zones,' to prevent the spread of Novel Coronavirus.

The other four districts include Mysuru, Uttara Kannada, Bengaluru and Chikkaballapur.

Mangaluru has been under strict lockdown, as it is close to Kasargod in Kerala, which reported many positive cases and is also one of the 'hotspots' in the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) list.
