With 3 MLAs in hand Gowda confident of berth for JD(S) in new Kerala govt

May 20, 2016

Bengaluru, May 20: JD(S) leader H D Deve Gowda on Thursday said that his party was assured of a Cabinet berth in the to-be-formed LDF government in Kerala.

GowdaJD(S) had fielded 5 candidates in the Kerala Assembly elections, of which three — C K Nanu (Vadakara), Krishnan Kutty (Chittur) and Mathew T Thomas (Thiruvalla) — have emerged victorious. The JD(S) had contested as part of the Left Democratic Front (LDF).

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Gowda, expressing happiness over his party's performance, said that whenever the LDF came to power, it had always given a ministerial post to a JD(S) legislator.

“Irrespective of the number of seats won by the JD(S), the LDF has always accommodated us in the Cabinet. Like the previous term, this time too JD(S) has been assured of a Cabinet berth. There is no need to lobby for it,” he said in response to a question. Taking a dig at the Congress, Gowda said that the national party had lost its stronghold in a majority of the states which it had ruled in for over a long time.

“The presence of Congress has dramatically dwindled over the last few years. After Rajasthan and Delhi, the party has now lost its base in Assam and Kerala. As a result, there is no other party to give BJP a competition, except for the regional parties of the states. Except for Assam, only regional parties have emerged victorious in 4 other states in the results announced today. This is the people's mandate,” he added.

Gowda also congratulated AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa and the TMC chief Mamata Banerjee for leading their parties to landslide victories.

He has also written congratulatory letters to the duo.

Mangaluru, Apr 19: District-in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary said that Rs 2000 each has been deposited in the bank accounts of 6,122 construction workers, who are registered with the labour department in the Dakshina Kannada district. The amount will be deposited in the accounts of other registered construction workers at the earliest.

The state government had announced Rs 2000 to construction labourers who are registered and have lost their livelihood due to the on-going nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The curbs, which were imposed on March 24, have been extended till May 3. "The labourers were reeling under hardship after construction activities came to a halt," said the Minister.

Supply food

Local bodies should make arrangements to supply food for stranded labourers, destitutes and beggars in all the ULBs in Dakshina Kannada district, Poojary said.

"No one should starve during the lockdown period. All the ULBs should identify destitutes, migrant labourers in their jurisdiction and arrange food for them. In case of necessity, the help of NGOs can also be taken," he added
The minister announced that Asha workers and health workers would collect information on people's health by visiting the houses in the district and submit a report within 10 days.

Bengaluru, Apr 16: In view of the raging coronavirus pandemic, no public iftaar or sehri will be organized during Ramazan, the month of fasting for the Muslims, the Karnataka Minority Welfare Department announced here on Thursday.

"No public shall be allowed to perform five-time congregational prayers in mosques, across Karnataka during Ramazan in view of COVID-19 pandemic. No public address system to be used by the staff of mosques for offering namaz,'' the department said.

During the holy month of Ramazan, it is a tradition to organise iftaar feasts for large gatherings by different people, especially by politicians, celebrities and the common wealthy people for their friends and family.

Ramazan is to commence from the 24th or 25th of April this year, depending on the sighting of the moon.

The order stated that Azaan (the call for prayer) shall be given at low decibel and namaaz including Friday namaaz, will be performed by the imams, moazzins and the masjid staff only.
No public should be allowed to offer namaaz in the mosques as per government directions, it said.

The state government also cited an order by the Ministry of Home Affairs dated April 15, which stated that "All religious places/places of worship shall be closed for public. Religious congregations are strictly prohibited due to the outbreak of COVID-19 across the country."
Thirty-four more COVID-19 cases, including 17 cases from Belagavi, have been reported from Karnataka. The total number of coronavirus cases in the state now stands at 313.

The total number of cases in India has now climbed to 12,380. Out of these cases, 1489 have been cured/discharged/migrated while 414 deaths have been reported so far, as per the latest data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
