3 new PG courses in Car Street First Grade College

Mangaluru, Jul 10: Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo said the Dayananda Pai-Sathish Pai Government First Grade College will start three new postgraduate courses — MA in Political Science, MSW and MSc in Chemistry in the academic year. 

Speaking to media persons here on Saturday, Mr Lobo, who is also chairman of Dayananda Pai-Sathish Pai Government First Grade College (Car Street) Development Committee, said the college has started MCom from last year. 

To help the poor students, a proposal has been submitted to the government for sanctioning a post-matric hostel on the college campus. A four-storeyed hostel has been planned through Backward Classes Department, to accommodate at least 200 girl students, he added. 

Wit the technological leap with the launch of ‘Jnana Sangama’, the attendance system in the college, has been made online from this year. The new e-attendance software will allow teachers to mark attendance on smart devices such as a laptop with the same data getting registered in the server as well. Further, a message will be sent to the parents, whenever a student remains absent to the classes, he said. 

Further, the MLA said under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), the college has received a grant of Rs 2 crore. In this, Rs 70 lakh has been utilised for the construction of classrooms, Rs 10 lakh for the purchase of laptops and Rs 19 lakh for ICT programme under ‘Jnana Sangama’. Rs 56 lakh has been released for modernisation and upgradation works and Rs 45 lakh for the purchase of equipment. The classrooms have been converted to smart classes, he explained. 

The college is also planing to start mid-day meals for the students at a concessional rate. A committee has been constituted under the leadership of the principal to contact the donors, he added. 

Highest admission

Stating that the admissions to various undergraduate courses in the college has seen a phenomenal increase, college principal Rajashekar Hebbar said already 716 students have been taken admission for first year undergraduate courses. Further, students will be admitted after the second PUC supplementary results are announced. The admission for first year may cross 800, he felt. 

The admission in the college is highest among 32 government colleges in the region. In addition, the Department of Collegiate Education has selected the college as Lead college for 19 government colleges in Dakshina Kannada for a period of three years from 2017-18, he said. 

An employment mela for the government colleges of Dakshina Kannada and a few selected colleges will be held in the college campus on July 21. Entrepreneur Dayananda Pai has promised to construct two more floors to the existing building at a cost of Rs 3 crore. Already, he has given furnitures and photocopy machines worth Rs 8 lakh to the college during the academic year. 

At a time when BBM courses are receiving poor admissions, the admissions in the college has reached 50 this year, said the principal. In addition, BSc in CBZ has been started during the academic year.

The Alumni Association members along with the members of Women’s Cell organized a programme to celebrate Women’s day and felicitate the student achievers in various fields.

The programme began with a prayer song by the members of the Women’s cell. Among the dignitaries were Sr Dr M Jeswina A.C, Principal, St Agnes College, Mrs Geanette Dsouza, Vice President, Agnesian Alumni Association, Ms Vivid Dsouza, Convenor of the programme and Secretary Agnesian Alumni Association, Mrs Jyothi Cutinha, Joint Secretary Agnesian Alumni Association. 

The college president, Ms Jerusha Maben welcomed the gathering followed by a welcome dance. The student achievers of the college were honoured by the Agnesian Alumni Association;

Agnesian Outstanding Leader Award sponsored by Mrs Carol Pais in honour of her parents Mr Philip and Mrs Mariette Pais is awarded to Ms Jerusha Maben of III BCom.

Agnesian All-Rounder Award sponsored by Mrs Marjorie Texeira is awarded to Ms Anna Una Crasta of II MA English.

Agnesian Scholar Award sponsored by Dr Meera Aranha is awarded to Ms Shane Joveeta Jovet of III BCom.

Agnesian Best Sports Woman Award sponsored by Mrs Daisy Coelho is awarded to Ms Anusha K.J of III BSc.

Agnesian Best NSS Volunteer is awarded to Nerissa Clementina Noronha of III BCom.

Agnesian Best NCC Cadet Award (Army Wing) is awarded to CPL Melani Lobo of III BCom.

Agnesian Best NCC Cadet Award (Air Wing) is awarded to CWO Vanditha Anusha Dsouza of III BSc.

Sr Dr M Jeswina AC presided over the programme congratulated all the student achievers and wished them the best.

Mrs Carol Pais compered the programme and Ms Vivid Dsouza, Secretary of Alumni Association proposed the vote of thanks.

Mangaluru, Jan 8: The centenary year of St. Agnes College got off to a grand start on January 3, 2020 with a day of commemoration that involved staff, students, alumni and benefactors. The college is all set to celebrate its centenary with the community of Mangaluru on January 10, 2020 from 9.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m with a daylong festival – Knowledge Factory. It will be held at the newly inaugurated air-conditioned auditorium with over 1000 attendees expected to be present. 

KNOWLEDGE FACTORY is the first of the five mega centenary programmes that St. Agnes College has envisaged.  The Promise Foundation and niiti Consulting – two organisations headquartered in the national capital under the mentorship of veteran journalist Madhavan Narayan are collaborating with the college to bring this event to Mangaluru for the first time.  A dozen icons will share the stage throughout the day and bring forth their thoughts and ideas enabling a culture of learning through fire-side chats and keynotes. 

The speakers include Lisa Ray, Indo-Canadian Actor and Author; Sunil Buch, Director, Live Nation; Dipannita Sharma, Actor and Supermodel; Kriti Tula, Co-Founder and Creative Director, Doodlage; Nandini Srikar, Singer and Composer; Prakash Belawadi, Movie and Theatre Actor,  Manasi Paresh Kumar, Senior Journalist; Swati Pande, Co-Founder and CEO, Arboreal; Anuradha Kedia Parekh, Co-Founder, The Better India; Arokiaswamy Velumani, Founder and Chairman, Thyrocare Technologies; Heena Sidhu, the former world  number 1 pistol shooter. The event anchor will be the celebrity news reader Rini Simon Khanna who has been anchoring the event since its first edition in 2017.

Gaurava Yadav, a well-known quiz master will conduct a quiz focussed on History.  Based on a written prelims that will take place at 8.15 am in the designated room, four teams of two members each will compete in the finals at 4.45 pm. The winning team will receive a prize of INR 30,000 and the runner up team will receive INR.20,000/-    

The event is put together by social entrepreneurs - Meena Vadiyanathan and Amith Prabhu (who is of Mangalorean origin).
