3-year-old boy dies after dad inflicts burn injuries on him with cigarette butt

Kolar, Mar 1: The police have arrested the parents of a 3-year-old boy for inflicting burn injuries on him with a cigarette butt to drive the “devil” out of him, which led to his death.

The accused are Harish, a private vehicle driver and his wife Renuka from Malur. HM Ranganaswamy, police sub-inspector, Malur, said Harish had tied the knot with Renuka four years ago.

Harish, a drunkard, would often find fault with his son and scold him. The boy became stubborn and would bear the beatings stoically. The parents asked their friends how to tackle the boy’s adamant attitude. While some friends advised Harish to threaten the boy, others said ‘devil’ may have possessed him.

A week ago, a drunk Harish came home and saw his son up to some mischief and started beating him with a stick. To “drive the devil” out of his body, Harish reportedly began inflicting burn injuries with a cigarette. When the boy began crying for help, Harish took him to Government Hospital in Malur and ensured he got medical aid. Over the next few days, the wounds began to get infected.

On Tuesday night, the boy developed high fever and was rushed to a private hospital where he was declared brought dead. Based on a complaint by Harish’s father Nanjundaiah, Malur police arrested the couple.

Harish initially said the burns were self-inflicted but after intense grilling, he confessed to the crime. Malur police remanded the accused in judicial custody and probe is on.

Mangaluru, Feb 15: Dense fog formation and poor visibility at the runway forced to delay and diversions of some flights arriving and take off at the Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) on Saturday.

Flights take off and landings were suspended from 0700 hours am to 1030 hours.

Many flights to land in the morning were diverted.

Bengaluru, Aug 6: No private hospital in Karnataka can turn away a patient without attending to him or her, irrespective of the Coronavirus status, an official has said.

"Private medical establishments shall not deny treatment and admission to any patient approaching the establishment irrespective of the fact that such patient may or may not be suffering from Covid-19," an official from the state Health and Family Welfare Department said on Wednesday.

Likewise, no private hospital can insist on a patient for a Covid-19 test report, said the official invoking the Disaster Management Act.

"The establishments also cannot insist for Covid test report," he said, directing all private hospitals to strictly abide by their responsibilities.

According to the department, it is the duty of every private hospital to provide first aid and take lifesaving steps when any patient approaches it.

"It is the duty of every private medical establishment to provide first aid and take lifesaving measures to stabilise the patient," he said.

The department also invoked statutes from Karnataka Medical Establishments Act 2017, under sections 11 and 11 (A) to drive home the message.

The directives assume significance at a time when several cases of private hospitals denying admissions and fleecing patients across the state have emerged.

"It has been noticed that some of the private hospitals are refusing treatment and admission to emergency patients, causing distress and this has resulted in complications, leading to death in certain cases," said the official.

The district authorities have been directed to take action on the erring hospitals as the department reiterated the responsibilities of private medical establishments.

Bengaluru, Mar 15: The civic body in Bengaluru has said that gathering at marriage functions should not exceed 100 people in order to curb the spread of coronavirus.

A circular issued by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) dated March 15 said, "All marriage functions pre booked in marriage halls, hotels, Party places, etc. prior to the issue of circular dated March 13, shall be allowed to be conducted subject to the condition that the gathering in the function not exceeding 100 persons."

"The above relaxation is an exception in consideration of the difficulties in rescheduling and cancelling the Marriage event immediately," the circular said.

It said, "The Owners/Management of such locations where Marriages are to be solemnized due to pre booking shall maintain high standards of sanitation and hygiene by periodically cleaning by 10 per cent Sodium Hydrochlorite Solution or any other effective disinfectant the surfaces, floors and exposed areas likely to be touched by the attendants."

"Any person attending the function having any such symptoms like Cough, Cold, and Fever etc. shall be requested for immediately leaving the Programmes," it said.

The civic body further said in the circular, "No fresh bookings of any place for Marriage programme are permitted till further orders. Any bookings on future dates by any organizer, event manager, owner of such property or any other person will be at his own risk and action will be taken against the property or any other person for any kind of bookings before an Order allowing such bookings is issued by a Competent Authority."

"The restrictions imposed are in the absolute interest of Public Health for preventing the Community Spread and outbreak of the disease at mass scale. All other restrictions imposed by order dated March 13 shall stand the same," the Circular added.
