3-year-old girl killed in hit-and-run accident; locals catch driver

accidentKasargod, Apr 2: In a heartrending tragedy, a three-year-old girl was killed after she was hit by a mini lorry near Pallikere in Kasaragod on Wednesday evening.

The victim has been identified as Fathimath Shazia (3), daughter of Abdul Khader, who works in Middle East.

The accident occurred while the little girl was crossing the road with her aunt. She was returning from nursery school after participating in a programme.

It is learnt that a speeding mini lorry hit Shazia and sped away without stopping.

However, the local residents, who witnessed the accident chased the mini lorry and caught the driver identified as Abdul Kareem.

The driver was handed over to police. Jurisdictional Bekal police have registered a case.

Mandya, Jan 25: A woman committed suicide by jumping into Vishveshwaraiah Canal after throwing her two children into the canal near Thibbanahalli in the Taluk, police said on Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Jyothi (33), Nisarga (7) and Pavan (4), of Hullenahalli.

According to police, the incident occurred on Friday.

Bengaluru, Apr 21: Alarmed by reports that 53 media persons have contracted coronavirus in Maharashtra, a Minister on Tuesday urged Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to screen all the journalists in Karnataka.

During the regular Covid-19 related briefing on Monday, a reporter had raised the issue of 53 journalists in the neighbouring state testing positive for the disease, with Minister for Primary and Secondary Education S Suresh Kumar.

In Maharashtra, out of the 171 scribes examined medically, 53 were found to have the viral infection.

In his letter to the CM, Kumar said a similar test should be carried on the journalists in Karnataka.

"The journalists wanted a similar kind of screening to be carried out on them. Therefore, please direct the health and the information department immediately to conduct the screening of journalists who are in contact with public," Kumar said.

Belagavi, Mar 14: After the first COVID-19 related death reported in the state, less number of people are travelling in North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) buses, official sources said here.

There were less number of travellers on Saturday as compared to any other day.

According to sources, many passengers cancelled their reservations to major cities like Bengaluru, Pune, Mumbai, Goa and Kalaburagi too.
