3-year-old girl killed in hit-and-run accident; locals catch driver

accidentKasargod, Apr 2: In a heartrending tragedy, a three-year-old girl was killed after she was hit by a mini lorry near Pallikere in Kasaragod on Wednesday evening.

The victim has been identified as Fathimath Shazia (3), daughter of Abdul Khader, who works in Middle East.

The accident occurred while the little girl was crossing the road with her aunt. She was returning from nursery school after participating in a programme.

It is learnt that a speeding mini lorry hit Shazia and sped away without stopping.

However, the local residents, who witnessed the accident chased the mini lorry and caught the driver identified as Abdul Kareem.

The driver was handed over to police. Jurisdictional Bekal police have registered a case.

Bengaluru, Jun 17: The Opposition leader in the Karnataka Assembly Siddaramaiah on Wednesday strongly urged Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to desist from invoking amendment to the Land Reforms Act, saying it would make buying land easier for the corporate companies and the rich.

In a hard-hitting letter to the Chief Minister, a copy of which was released to the media, the Congress leader had urged to rescind the decision from amending to the Karnataka Land Reforms Act and also Agriculture Produces Marketing Committee Act.

Asserting that the state government's move was only intending to help to the land grabbers, Siddaramaiah, also the former chief minister, said easing of restrictions to buy land to the tune of over 216 acres per individual would sound a death knell to the farm sector.

Mangaluru,  May 3: An unidentified vehicle mowed down a 62-year-old security guard near Guruvayanakere, Belthangady taluk, on Saturday.

The deceased Lingappa Moolya was returning to his home in Guruvayanakere on a two-wheeler when the hit-and-run case took place. Police said he was hit by a truck. A guard at an ATM, Moolya was also an active member of the local Kulala Association.

A case was registered at Belthangady police station.

Mangaluru, Jan 18: The Dakshina Kannada District Karavali Utsava Samiti has chosen senior Journalist and Assistant Editor on Udayavani Daily Manohar Prasad for the Karavali Gaurava Prashasti 2019-20.
