Belagavi, Sept 23: A two-and-a-half year old girl was brutally raped, murdered and buried by her uncle, in Kurubagodi village of Raibag taluk of Belagavi district on Thursday. Harugeri police on Friday arrested the victim’s uncle Uddappa Ramappa Ganiger (32), who confessed to the crime.

Superintended of Police BR Ravikanthe Gowda said Ganiger lured the girl from her home, promising her chocolates, then took her to a sugarcane field and raped her. When the child began to cry, he squeezed her neck and killed her, then dug a pit in the same field and buried the top part of her body.

When their daughter failed to return home, her worried parents searched for her and as night fell, registered a missing complaint at Harugeri police station.

As police began investigations, local shopkeepers informed cops that they had seen the girl with Ganiger, who was buying her chocolates. Police immediately took him into custody, and he confessed and directed them to the sugarcane field belonging to Bhimappa Naganur.

Police and villagers rushed to the field and saw a horrifying scene -- the head and half the body of the girl was buried in the earth, her private parts bleeding.

Police booked a case under Sections 376, 366 (A), 302 and 201 and 4, 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. The girl's body was handed over to her parents after a postmortem at Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences on Friday evening.

This is the second rape of a minor within a fortnight, and the 48th in the past six months. The brutal incidents have left the district in shock and raised the hackles of the public. On September 8, a 28-month-old girl was raped by a 21-year-old youth in a school at Vannur village in Bailhongal taluk of Belagavi. After the crime, the accused had tried to bury her alive.

‘Hang him’

Laxman, the girl's father, demanded that the accused be immediately hanged. "He carried my daughter on his shoulder after she returned from school, and took her to buy chocolates. We searched for her till night. Since many people had seen him with her in the evening, it helped police," said the distressed father.

Mother Sudha could not believe that her brother could commit such a heinous crime. "Being an uncle, one can't imagine the brutality he committed on my daughter. Her mouth and private parts were filled with mud. We don't know why he did it," she wept.

Civil society protests, demands justice

When Uddappa Ganiger was brought to Belagavi district government hospital on Friday, hundreds of activists belonging to women's organizations, and Hindu, Muslim and Kannada organizations gathered at the hospital premises and urged the police to hand him over to them.

The September 8 rape had also led to women's organizations staging a protest and demanding stringent action against the accused.

Seema Sayyad, district president of Human Rights Organization, blamed the police for protecting notorious criminals. "Such criminals should be punished in public by women," she said.

"I am ready to go to jail for punishing the culprit. There is need for immediate punishment for rapists through fast track courts. Our legal system protects such criminals for years, keeps them in jail and feeds them well. We will start an agitation tomorrow for immediate punishment to the accused," Ayesha Sanadi, state president of Human Rights Organization, said.

Social worker and human rights activist Ashwini Lengade questioned the Beti Bachao campaign, when so many atrocities are being committed against women. Women in the country require safety, she said. Sensing public anger, police shifted Ganiger to another hospital for a medical test.

New Delhi, Feb 3: Congress leader BK Hariprasad on Monday condemned BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde's remark on Mahatma Gandhi and termed him as "son" of Nathuram Godse, the assassin of the freedom fighter.

"Only sons of Nathuram Godse can make such comments on Mahatma Gandhi," Hariprasad said.

Hedge had attacked Mahatma Gandhi by calling the freedom struggle led by him a "drama" and also questioned as to how "such people" come to be called 'Mahatma' in India.

"None of these so-called leaders were beaten up by the cops even once. Their independence movement was one big drama. It was staged by these leaders with the approval of the British. It was not a genuine fight. It was an adjustment freedom struggle," he had said.

The Trinamool Congress also lent its support to Congress as its leader Saugata Roy said people like Anant Hegde cause shame to the nation. "We are a supporter of Gandhi and they (BJP) are Nathuram Godse supporters. People of this country should see how BJP MPs are as they insult father of the nation," he added.

BJP leaders too found it difficult to defend Hegde on the controversial remarks.

Senior leader Jagdambika pal was cautious in his defence and said, "The whole world knows about Gandhi and it may be his personal opinion."

Whereas senior BJP leaders avoid commenting on Hegde, Union Minister Ashwani Choubey said that Hegde should not have made the comment and added that Gandhi is a well-respected figure in the nation.

Another BJP MP from Haryana Sanjay Bhatia also tried to shy away from making a direct comment and instead said," Congress did not implement what Gandhi preached. It is Prime Minister Narendra Modi who implemented Gandhi's teachings in letter and spirit."

Bengaluru, Feb 12: Hinting at the possibility of a consolidation of ex-Janata Parivar leaders, JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda said Tuesday his party was open to talk to any former Janata leaders, who are at present either in various factions of the Janata Dal or in Congress and BJP. The veteran leader also appreciated Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP's way of work.

At the party's National Executive Committee meeting held here, Gowda said that some ex-Janata Parivar leaders had reached out to him in this regard. His comments come at a time when JD(U) leader Mahima Patel recently rekindled the debate of a unified Janata Parivar.

However, Deve Gowda was clear that he was not interested in pursuing anyone who was happy with the party they were in. "It's a waste of time to pursue someone who has seen success within their party. I am not going to do that. I am willing to persuade only those who are not holding any office at present," he said. He added that he had already asked party leaders in Kerala to take the initiative and figure out ways to bring leaders together. As for other places, it would take him some time to reach out people, he added.

The party, which organised the National Executive Meet here on February 10 and 11, spoke of strategies to rejuvenate the party from the grassroots level. The party is also conducting a membership drive.

'Much to learn from AAP'

There is much to learn from Aam Aadmi Party, which registered a victory in Delhi elections on Tuesday, said Devegowda. "Kejriwal has showed that caste does not matter. There is lesson to be learnt from the work done by AAP," he said. Later in the day, Deve Gowda also wrote a letter to Arvind Kejriwal, congratulating him on his victory.

On the occasion, the party also came up with resolutions to urge the central government to release pending amount of GST it owed to state governments apart from focusing on development of labour, industries and agriculture; to demand the centre to rollback decision on CAA, NRC and NPR and to urge the centre to pass the women's reservation bill.

At the JD(S) National Executive Meet, even as news poured in about the victory of Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi elections, the JD(S) leaders celebrated Arvind Kejriwal's victory. Seeing it as an optimistic sign for regional parties across the country, the leaders distributed sweets to mark the hat trick win of Kejriwal.
