30-day quit call to PM non-negotiable: Imran Khan

Islamabad, Aug 25: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan has said his call for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to step down for a 30-day period is non-negotiable and the ball is now in the government's court, media reported Monday.

Imran Khan"It is an ultimate compromise on my earlier demand, nobody should expect more than this and now the turn is of the government," the Nation quoted Khan as saying Sunday at a sit-in in Islamabad's D-Chowk.

"We have given them a way out yesterday (Saturday) as we want a middle ground," Khan said.

The PTI chairman said initially he was not ready to withdraw his demand for the resignation of the prime minister and re-election to parliament, but PTI vice-chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi had come up with a formula to which he agreed.

Qureshi said the PTI had witnesses to rigging of last year's general elections but they were not speaking out now as they would talk after Sharif had resigned.

Khan said his movement was even bigger than Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto's as at that time only the middle-class was with Bhutto but "now all classes of society stand by me".

The protests in Islamabad, that began Aug 15, entered the 10th day Monday as PTI, Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) and the government remained deadlocked over the issue of resignation by Sharif who is accused of rigging the 2013 general elections.

Geneva, Mar 30: The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide has reached 634,835, among them 29,957 fatalities, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Sunday.

Over the past 24 hours, 63,159 people were confirmed to be infected with the novel coronavirus and 3,464 people died, the WHO said.

According to the latest situation report, the majority of the confirmed cases - more than 361,000 - are presently concentrated in Europe, with Italy leading the tally with over 92,000 cases, followed by Spain with over 72,000 cases, and Germany with over 52,000 cases.

Italy and Spain are also the countries that top the worldwide death toll from COVID-19, with 10,023 and 5,690 fatalities, respectively.

The second most affected region is currently the Americas with over 120,000 verified COVID-19 cases, of which the majority - over 103,000 - have been found in the United States. The US is also the country with the highest single tally of COVID-19 cases at the moment.
The WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11.

Geneva, Apr 23: The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday (local time) said that the COVID-19 crisis will not end any time soon, with several countries only in the initial stages of the fight against the virus.

"Make no mistake, we have a long way to go. Coronavirus will be with us for a long time. There is no question that stay at home orders and other physical distancing measures have successfully suppressed transmission in many countries," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a press conference.

"Most countries are in the early stages of their epidemics. And some, which were affected early in the pandemic, are now starting to see a resurgence in the number of cases," he added.

COVID-19 has infected more than 2.6 million people around the world and a total of 1,83,027 people have died due to coronavirus, according to data from US-based Johns Hopkins University.

Washington, Mar 31: The United States has performed over one million coronavirus tests so far, said President Donald Trump on Monday.

"Today, we reached a historic milestone in our war against coronavirus. Over 1 million Americans have now been tested, more than any other country by far, not even close," Trump said during a press briefing.

US Health Secretary Alex Azar said that approximately 100,000 samples are tested for coronavirus daily.

The number of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases within the United States surpassed 150,000 and the death toll has reached 2828, according to Johns Hopkins University.
