30 farmers arrested for felling 4,200 trees in reserve forest

Rattihalli, Jul 3: The forest department on Sunday arrested 30 persons in Rattihalli village of Hirekerur taluk on the charge of felling as many as 4,200 trees in reserved forest and cultivating the forest land.farmers

Deputy Conservator of Forests Sonal Vrishni said that the farmers had illegally cut honge, sandalwood and other trees grown on 25 hectares of Kamalapura reserved forest. Further, they have destroyed the forest by setting it on fire.

The forest officials detained 82 persons in this connection, but finally arrested 30. The remaining 52 were released after obtaining an undertaking from them, the DCF said.

The farmers said that they had been cultivating the said forest land since 1990 and the forest department had evicted them in 2006. Later, the land was entrusted to village forest committee. The farmers had been submitting applications for regularisation of their cultivation and issue of title deeds. Following refusal from the officials, the disappointed farmers cultivated around three acres on Sunday. They said that they could have destroyed about 100 trees.

Forest range officer B C Arishinada said that attempts were made to fell trees two days ago, but the officials had convinced the farmers.

Bengaluru, Jul 17: Karnataka Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar held a meeting through video conference on Thursday with private and government establishments involved in testing and treatment of COVID-19 in the state.

A total of 51,422 cases including 19,729 recoveries and 1,032 deaths were reported in the state till yesterday.

On the same day, K Sudhakar also paid a surprise visit to the Bengaluru's CV Raman Hospital and urged the administration to follow COVID-19 guidelines properly. He also took stock of the hospital's preparedness to fight the deadly virus.

"Surprise visits will continue. I will be in touch with every lab and get the right number of tests done on a daily basis," the minister said while speaking to the media.

He also urged the people who have recovered from coronavirus to donate their plasma to save other lives, adding that donors will receive a reward of Rs 5,000 as a token of appreciation.

Mangaluru, Mar 4: Fifteen Iranian fishermen, arrested for illegally entering Indian waters, were shifted from Mangaluru to Central Prison Bengaluru at Parappana Agrahara recently.

 On October 21, coast guard officials intercepted two fishing vessels near Gayathri island, about 168 nautical miles off Mangaluru Coast and took into custody 15 crew members after they failed to produce necessary documents.

While one of the boats capsized after developing a technical snag, the other boat was brought to Mangalore Port.

On the basis of a written complaint lodged by Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Deputy Commandant Kuldeep Sharma, Karnataka State Coastal Security Police (KSCP) station in Mangaluru filed case against the 15 Iranian fishermen under Maritime Zone of Indian Act 1981.

Bhatkal, Mar 30: Uttara Kannada district administration has decided to shift all those Bhatkal residents who have returned from abroad after March 15 to quarantine facilities in Bhatkal town to avoid further family contacts, Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada K Harish Kumar said on Monday.

“All primary contacts identified are already in government quarantine facilities,” he said in a communique.

All people must cooperate to maintain social distancing to avoid further spread of COVID-19, he added.
