Mysuru, Jun 13: Over a week after a 38-year-old Dalit man was attacked and paraded naked for allegedly entering a temple in Chamarajanagar district, chief minister HD Kumaraswamy ordered police to bring the guilty to book.

After a lull of nine days, police swung into action and arrested four persons for their alleged role in the incident at Kebbekatte, Gundlupet, on June 3. On Tuesday, dalit outfits protested in front of Gundlupet station, seeking action against the accused. The CM tweeted: “Everybody should condemn such inhuman incidents.”

Police launched probe after the victim’s cousin Kantharaju filed a complaint. He said on June 2, S Pratap, a science graduate, had gone to Marimallappa’s School in Mysuru to appear in a competitive exam. “He couldn’t reach the exam hall on time and decided to return. On his way back, his bike broke down at Raghavapura,” Kantharaju said. While fixing the bike, some miscreants allegedly threatened him and fled with his bike.

With no option to return home, Pratap chose to spend the night in the seemingly secure corridors of Shaneshwara temple. The priest walked in by 6am the next day and questioned Pratap. That’s when the priest found out he was a Dalit. He summoned villagers who allegedly took law into their hands.

Police said the four accused thrashed and paraded Pratap naked on Veeranapura Road for entering the temple. They recorded the act and uploaded it on social media. Basavaraju, Manikya, Satisha and Channakeshava Murthy, all residents of Madrahalli village, were arrested on Wednesday. Temple priest Shivappa and Puttaswamy, another accused, were taken into custody on Tuesday.

When the officials collected information from various sources, they realised that the duo had travelled to Bantwal, Kasargod, Ullal and other places in Dakshina Kannada, said Dr Sooda. Hence, the district administration decided to file cases against them, he added.
