4 young RSS workers arrested for murder of CPM activist

Kasaragod, Jul 18: Four activists of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh have been arrested in Kannur yesterday in connection with the July 11 murder of a 38-year old CPM worker over political rivalry in the politically volatile Payyannur district, police said.

A team led by Payyannur Circle Inspector V Ramesh arrested Vysakh, 21, Sukesh, 29, Prejithlal, 21, and Anoop, 21, all hailing from the district, they said.

The arrested men were among the eight persons identified as accused in the case. The four allegedly had direct involvement in the crime and the others will also be nabbed soon, police said.

CV Dhanaraj was hacked to death by a group of people, allegedly RSS activists, when he was entering his house at Payyannur. He had died while being rushed to the hospital.

In a suspected retaliatory attack hours later, 52-year-old BJP activist Ramachandran, an autorickshaw driver, was murdered by another group at his house in Vellur village in the district, police said.

No arrests had been made so far in this connection.

Kannur and some parts of the state had witnessed clashes between CPM and BJP workers after the May 16 Assembly election results.

Karnataka: People in Coast, Malnad urged to be cautious amid covid, rains

Bengaluru, Aug 6: With rains in several parts of Karnataka amid Covid-19 pandemic, state Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar on Thursday asked the people to maintain caution and contact the Health department helpline in case of any symptoms.

"There is heavy rain in several districts of the state's coastal, Malnad and north interior regions. People have to observe utmost caution during these rains amid corona infections. In case of any symptoms like fever, cough and cold immediately call the health department helpline 104," Sudhakar tweeted.

As of August 5 evening, cumulatively 1,51,449 Covid-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 2,804 deaths and 74,679 discharges.

Among the districts where the new cases were reported, Bengaluru urban tops the list accounting for 64,881 cases.

Regarding Bengaluru, Sudhakar said, there are 4,276 beds across 11 Covid care centres in Bengaluru.

"As of today morning, 936 of them i.e., 27.79 percent are vacant. Out of the 3,346 patients, 306 patients are due for discharge today," he said in another tweet.

Aimed at availing beds at Covid-19 hospitals for symptomatic patients and those in need, the government had decided to shift all asymptomatic patients to Covid care centres.

Throat swabs of Mudigere doctor, 28 contacts test covid-19 negative

Mudigre, May 23: The throat swab sample of a Primary Health Care doctor at Mudigere in Chikkamagaluru district tested negative for COVID-19.

It was wrongly tested positive for COVID-19 on May 19, clarified DC Dr Bagadi Gautham.

The doctor's throat swab was tested again in Shivamogga and Hassan labs where it has tested negative. He will be discharged from hospital, said the DC.

All the 28 contacts of the doctor too tested negative.

A total of 485 primary contacts and 961 secondary contacts of the doctor were quarantined after the throat swab of the doctor was tested positive. All the contacts who have been quarantined will be sent back home from quarantine centres, added DC.
