40 Congress legislators, 10 ministers get an earful for not using social media

Bengaluru, Oct 7: Ten ministers and 40 legislators of the ruling Congress came under severe criticism by the party leadership for not using social media platforms to promote the state government’s achievements.

AICC general secretary in-charge of Bengaluru district K C Venugopal, who held marathon meetings on Friday to review preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections, lamented that only a handful of leaders were using Facebook and Twitter effectively.

The KPCC gave him a list of those who had turned a blind eye to social media platforms.

“There are 10 ministers and 40 MLAs who are not using social media. They have been directed to open Facebook and Twitter accounts immediately,” KPCC working president Dinesh Gundu Rao told reporters. “They are to use social media platforms to discuss progress in their departments and districts, and also comment on political developments,” he said.

Venugopal is said to have taken Kannada and Culture Minister Umashree to task. “Being the culture minister, you don’t have any presence either on Facebook or Twitter,” he told her during a meeting.

Venugopal pointed out that the AICC had issued a circular recently mandating leaders to open social media accounts. Besides Umashree, ministers and MLAs hailing from north Karnataka were noted for their absence on social media. Some of them include Muzrai Minister Rudrappa Lamani, Excise Minister R B Timmapur and Hangal MLA Manohar Tahasildar.

Apparently, some leaders said that they did not know how to use social media platforms and that they were uncomfortable with technology. Venugopal asked them to hire assistants who can handle social media accounts on their behalf.

The state Congress wants to make the most of social media, which became a key tool for the BJP to sweep the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. In August, the party launched INC Karnataka Digital, a platform to rope in digital volunteers to strengthen its cyberspace presence. It was only recently that KPCC president G Parameshwara and Youth Empowerment and Sports Minister Pramod Madhwaraj opened their Twitter accounts.

Mangaluru, June 10: The first direct repatriation flight from Damma to Mangaluru International Airport under Vande Bharat Mission will be operated on June 21.

Thousands of people from coastal districts of Karnataka are stranded without flights in different parts of Saudi Arabia after the announcement of covid lockdown in March this year.

Even though the government of India launched Vande Bharat Mission to repatriate Indian expatriate through special flights, no flight was scheduled from Saudi Arabia to Mangaluru.

Several organisations had exerted pressure on the government of India and government of Karnataka to bring back stranded Kannadigas from Saudi Arabia.

With the sole intention of helping the stranded Kannadigas, a few philanthropists in Saudi Arabia last month formed an NGO called Saudi Kannadigas Humanity Forum under the leadership of Zakariya Bajpe and Sheikh Expertise.

Mysuru, Jan 16: A day after the Mysuru Advocates’ Association refused to defend a student in Mysuru who has been charged with sedition case for displaying a ‘Free Kashmir’ placard, president of the People’s Lawyers’ Guild of Davangere, has come forward to appear in the Court on behalf of her.

Opposing the attack on JNU students and teachers at JNU recently, Nalini had displayed a ‘Free Kashmir’ placard during a protest on January 8 at Manasagangotri of the University of Mysore (UoM) campus here.

Members of the Mysuru Bar Association decided not to represent Nalini.

Bengaluru, May 30: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has announced that on May 31 (Sunday) there will not be a total lockdown and all activities will be permitted and continue like the rest of the week.

The decision was taken in view of demands from citizens and “keeping their interests in mind,” said a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).

This means that public transport services - buses, autos and cabs - shops, commercial establishments and others will be open on May 31.

Under a Lockdown 4.0, Karnataka had decided to throw open public transport, except metro, shops and commercial establishments, except Metro, on all six days between 7 am and 7 pm. However, May 24 and May 31 - Sundays - were exempted from the relaxation and a curfew was to be imposed throughout the day.

The Lockdown 4.0 ends May 31 and the government's decision to keep Sunday free comes ahead of the Lockdown 5.0 that the Centre is expected to announce soon.
