439 new Gram Panchayats to be formed in Karnataka ahead of 2015 polls

karnatakaBangalore, Oct 29: As many as 439 new Gram Panchayats may be formed in Karnataka by the time the government will hold elections Gram Panchayat election in the state in May 2015. With this the number of Gram Panchayats in Karnataka will go up to 6,068 from 5,629.

A committee appointed by the government to study the relevance of the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Act, 1993, headed by S.G. Nanjayyanamath, in its report submitted on Tuesday recommended for the formation of 439 new GPs. Each one of these will have an approximate population of 6,175.

Accepting the report, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the recommendations would be implemented by the next elections to GPs, which is due in May 2015.

Another committee, headed by K. Narasimhamurty, identified over 3,351 Lambani and Banjara tandas (settlements) in the State, against 1,334 in revenue records, and recommended for converting them into revenue villages.

Udupi, Mar 25: A 34-year-old man who returned from Dubai tested positive for novel coronavirus in Udupi district. This is the first case in the district. 

He returned from Dubai on March 18 and got admitted to a government hospital in Udupi on March 23 for fever. The swab samples were sent to Shivamogga laboratory for testing.

The report which arrived on Wednesday confirmed that he was positive for COVID-19, said DHO Dr Sudhir Chandra Sooda.

Mangaluru, Apr 1: Dakshina Kannada District in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary on Tuesday announced that essential shops including grocery stores, fruits and vegetable shops will be allowed to open from Wednesday between 0700 hrs to 1200 hrs across the district.

Speaking at a press conference, he said that Milk, Medical, Gas distribution, Petrol Bunks, Banks will be opened as usual, he informed adding that Central Market and the Suratkal Market will remain closed.

With the Dakshin Kannada district administration relaxing the lockdown from 0600 hrs to 1500 hrs to purchase essential commodities, panic-stricken citizens rushed to the shops early in the morning itself.

Bengaluru, Jun 30: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday demanded setting up of an all-party committee to monitor treatment-related issues in hospitals and said there are allegations of "corruption and nepotism" in the management of COVID-19 treatment.

Siddaramaiah said in a tweet that Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa should immediately form all-party monitoring committee.

"This is very much needed to increase public confidence in the backdrop of several complaints," he said.
"There are allegations of corruption and nepotism in the management of COVID-19 treatment. It is need of the hour to manage this unprecedented health crisis with public safety as the only objective," he said in another tweet.

He urged the Chief Minister to make the treatment protocol clear to the patients and instil hope. "Do not keep them in dark," he said.

The senior Congress leader also urged the Chief Minister to extend insurance and other benefits to private hospital doctors, nurses and support staff.
Karnataka has reported a total of 14,295 COVID-19 cases.
