Jeddah, Mar 24: Five Indian Grade 12 students are in a critical condition in hospital after the car they were driving in spun out of control and crashed into a tree on Friday morning.

Four are studying at the International Indian School-Jeddah (IISJ) and the fifth student is at Delhi Public School.

All five students had taken their Central Board of Secondary Education exams on Friday morning at the IISJ in Rehab district and were heading home when the accident occurred.

car accident“All five are on ventilators,” said IISJ Principal Syed Masood Ahmad who had rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the news. “Two of them are being treated in the intensive care unit at Al-Jeddani Hospital and the other three are at Solaiman Fakeeh Hospital.”

The car struck the median and then crashed into a tree. The vehicle was a wreck. Rescuers had to cut the unconscious students out of the mangled car.

“No other car was involved in the accident,” said the principal. He called on the community to pray for the students.

“The two students who have been brought to our hospital are in bad shape,” said Iqbal Musani, a senior doctor at Al-Jeddani Hospital. “They have multiple injuries to their heads, hands and legs. One student has a brain hemorrhage and that is a major cause for concern. We are doing our best,” he told Arab News.

Dubai, July 13: An explosion caused by a gas leak damaged a restaurant, and nearby shops at a residential building in Dubai on Monday morning.

According to Brigadier Abdul Haleem Al Hashemi, Deputy Director of Al Qusais Police Station, the incident took place at 4am when the restaurant was closed.

No injuries were reported, but two nearby shops, a pharmacy, a salon and three cars were severely damaged.

"Dubai Police patrols were immediately dispatched to the scene and worked with Dubai Civil Defense to evacuate residents of the two-storey building as a precautionary measure," Brig Al Hashimi explained.

Preliminary investigations showed that the blast was caused by a gas leak, the officer said. The Crime Scene Department of the General Department of Forensics and Criminology in Dubai is studying the evidence collected from the site and will be preparing the final report on the accident.

Brig Al Hashimi urged restaurant owners to ensure that all safety and security systems at their outlets are in good condition. Regular maintenance checks should also be conducted on all pipes and gas regulators, especially during the summer season.

Jerusalem, May 17: The Chinese ambassador to Israel was found dead in his home north of Tel Aviv on Sunday, Israel's Foreign Ministry said.

No cause of death was given and Israeli police said it was investigating.

Du Wei, 58, was appointed envoy in February in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. He previously served as China's envoy to Ukraine.

He is survived by a wife and son, both of whom were not in Israel.

Israel enjoys good relations with China.

The ambassador's death comes just two days after he condemned comments by visiting U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who denounced Chinese investments in Israel and accused China of hiding information about the coronavirus outbreak.
