55 terrorists killed during infiltration since Jan.: Parrikar

Belagavi, Sep 8: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has said that at least 55 terrorists were killed during their infiltration bid from across the border into Indian territory since January this year, while the country had lost 17 jawans in line of duty.

parrikarTalking to mediapersons on the sidelines of an interactive meeting with entrepreneurs here on Monday, he said that terrorist infiltration could be prevented by elimination only. The casualties on the terrorist side was 55 against 17 Indian soldiers killed during the last eight months, which indicated that terrorist-to-Indian jawan ratio on casualties was 1:4.

The number of terrorists killed during the period was due to army interceptions, he added.

To a question, he said that no foreign nation had constructed any road inside Indian territory. The Union government was laying roads to connect its borders at the earliest possible.

‘Make in India’

Earlier, he interacted with existing and prospective entrepreneurs and stressed the need to adopt the “Make in India” programme initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that the Union government had taken several steps to simplify rules and regulations to attract investments in various industrial activities.

He also took time out to view the products manufactured by the city-based Servocontrols Aerospace (I) Pvt. Ltd., a company which supplied ‘Position Sensors’ used in the space mission (Mangalayaana) last year. Managing Director of the company Deepak V. Dhadoti highlighted the potential of Belagavi for investments, particularly in the defence manufacturing sector.

Mahadayi water

Mr. Parrikar declined to comment on issues related to sharing Mahadayi waters stating that the matter was before the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal and he could not invite contempt of court and left the venue.

Suresh C. Angadi, MP, Prabhakar Kore, Rajya Sabha member, Sanjay B. Patil, MLA, and Abhay Patil, former MLA, were present.

New Delhi, May 28: The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police will file 12 chargesheets against 536 Tablighi Jamaat members from three countries, officials said on Thursday.

Till now, the police has already filed chargesheets against 374 foreigners from 32 countries.

The officials said the charges against the Tablighi Jamaat members pertain to violation of visa rules, government guidelines regarding the Epidemic Disease Act and acting negligently in a way that was likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life.

The Tablighi Jamaat, a religious organisation in Nizamuddin in South Delhi, had allegedly organised a congregation in March in violation of mass gatherings.

The Tablighi Jamaat’s Nizamuddin Markaz (centre) had become a coroavirus hotspot in the national capital.

Mumbai, Feb 6: The Reserve Bank of India, for the second straight time, on Thursday kept its key policy rate unchanged at 5.15 per cent, maintaining its accommodative policy stance as long as it was necessary to revive growth.

The central bank retained GDP growth at 5 per cent for 2019-20 and pegged it at 6 per cent for the next fiscal.

"Economic activity remains subdued and the few indicators that have moved up recently are yet to gain traction in a more broad-based manner. Given the evolving growth-inflation dynamics, the MPC felt it appropriate to maintain status quo,” the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) said.

The six-member committee voted unanimously to hold rates, but also said that there is “policy space available for further action”.

Between February and October 2019, the RBI had reduced repo rate by 135 basis points.

Idukki, Aug 8: Nine more bodies have been recovered from the landslide ravaged Pettimudi near Munnar in Idukki on Saturday. With this the death toll in the tragedy reached 26. Around 40 are feared to be still trapped under the debris or washed away.

The rescue operation by NDRF and Fire and Rescue Services that was stopped by Friday evening due to poor light and bad weather resumed by Saturday morning.

Horrifying scene prevailed in the area as relatives of the missing people screamed around in search of their beloved ones. As it is nearly 48 hours since the incident happened, the chances of recovering missing persons alive from the debris is becoming bleak. Three of the bodies recovered on Saturday could not be identified till evening.

Kerala Revenue Minster E Chandrasekharan, who visited the area on Saturday, said that search operation would be carried out until all the missing are recovered.

It was by around 11.30 pm on Thursday that landslide had hit the Nayamakkad estate of Kannan Devan Hills and Plantations. Settlement clusters of plantation workers where 83 persons were staying were reduced to debris as the huge rocks came bulldozing. Five of the residents were reported to be not in the spot while the mishap occured.

Meanwhile, heavy rains led to floods at many parts of the state. Red alert has been issued at Idukki, Malappuram and Wayanad districts for Sunday also. A total of 11,446 persons of 3,530 families were shifted to relief camps across the state, of which major chunk is at Wayanad.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that water level at most dams is increasing swiftly.
