Surat, May 21: Six Hindu Mahasabha activists were arrested for allegedly celebrating the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse at a temple in Surat’s Limbayat area on Sunday, police said.

Godse was born in Baramati in Pune district, then part of the Bombay Presidency, on May 19 in 1910. Godse was born in Baramati in Pune district, then part of the Bombay Presidency, on May 19 in 1910.

The Hindu Mahasabha activists had organised the celebration in the premises of Suryamukhi Hanuman temple in Limbyayat area of the city, following which they were arrested on Monday, said Surat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma.

"During the celebration of Godse’s birth anniversary, these Hindu Mahasabha members lit up diyas around Godse’s photo, exchanged sweets and sang bhajans in the temple premise. They even made videos and took photographs of the event," said Sharma.

"Their act of revering Godse, who had killed Gandhiji, deeply hurt the sentiments of citizens. It was an attempt to incite people and disturb the peaceful atmosphere," said Sharma. Officials said the six have been arrested under IPC sections 153 (provocation with an intent to cause riot), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups, doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 153B (making assertions prejudicial to national integration).

Police identified those arrested as Hiren Mashru, Vala Bharwad, Viral Malvi, Hitesh Sonar, Yogesh Patel and Manish Kalal.

Condemning the act of the Hindu Mahasabha, the ruling BJP’s spokesperson Bharat Pandya said criticising Gandhiji was like "spitting at the sky", adding that such celebrations were being carried out by "immature people who do not have the vision to under the Mahatma’s teachings". The Congress, however, attacked the BJP on the issue.

"The BJP must tell the nation whether they endorse Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology or that of Godse. Be it Anant Kumar Hegde or Pragya Singh Thakur, BJP leaders are busy promoting Godse’s ideology. This is a matter of serious concern," said Gujarat Congress spokesperson, Manish Doshi, adding that the ruling party’s "double standards" have been exposed. Gujarat Minister for State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja said the state government would not tolerate such celebrations of Godse’s birthday, and claimed prompt instruction to the police led to all six Mahasabha members being arrested.

United Nations, Jul 10: India is a "good example" as solar auctions have seen popularity amidst the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, UN chief Antonio Guterres said on Thursday, underlining that renewable energy is the only energy source expected to grow in 2020 and offers more jobs than the fossil fuel industry.

In his remarks to the International Energy Agency "Clean Energy Transition Summit'', UN Secretary-General Guterres urged the international community to commit to further usage of coal and to end all external financing of coal in the developing world.

"Coal has no place in COVID-19 recovery plans. Nations must commit to net-zero emissions by 2050 and submit more ambitious national climate plans before COP-26 next year," he said.

"The seeds of change are there. Renewable energy is the only energy source expected to grow in 2020. Solar auctions have seen popularity amidst the height of the pandemic. India serves as a good example. Renewables offer three times more jobs than the fossil fuel industry," Mr Guterres said.

Last month, Adani Green Energy said it has bagged the first of its kind manufacturing-linked solar contract worth Rs 45,000 crore from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to develop 8 GW electricity generation capacity and 2 GW equipment manufacturing facility in the country.

Mr Guterres said he has asked all countries to consider six climate positive actions as they rescue, rebuild and reset their economies.

"We need to make our societies more resilient. We need green jobs and sustainable growth," he said, adding that bailout support to sectors such as industry, aviation and shipping should be conditioned on alignment with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Countries also need to stop wasting money on fossil fuel subsidies and place a price on carbon, he said, noting that countries need to consider climate risk in their decision making.

"Every financial decision must take account of environmental and social impacts. Overall, we need to work together," he said.
