Ballari, Jun 8: As many as 671 sheep died, a couple of houses were partially damaged and culverts and drains and a few rural roads were also damaged when rivulets overflowed following incessant and heavy rain that lashed various parts of Ballari district on Tuesday night.

The damage was extensive in Ballari taluk which witnessed 66 mm rainfall. Storm water gushed into several houses in the low-lying areas in the city and the overflowing rivulets washed off certain portion of roads besides damaging culvert and drains in rural areas.
The 671 sheep and a few goats died due to hypothermic shock near Batri locality in the city and surrounding villages.
Several Krishi Hondas in various villages around Ballari got filled to the brim, while a few were damaged after the bunds were washed away in the flash floods.
Storm water also gushed into some of the rooms of the Veerashaiva College and luckily, the answer scripts of the Vijayanagar Sri Krishnadevaraya University kept there for valuation were safe as they were protected with plastic.
Mayor D. Venkataramana visited the affected areas in the city, while Deputy Commissioner Ramprasath Manohar and ZP CEO K.V. Rajendra went round the rain-affected places in the rural areas.
Mr. Ramprasath directed the officials concerned to initiate immediate steps to restore the damaged roads and culverts and drains. The following is the taluk-wise average rainfall: Ballari 66 mm, Hadagali 07 mm, Hosapete 19 mm, Hagari Bommanahalli 09 mm, Kudligi 03 mm, Sirguppa 37 mm and Sandur 17 mm.
