Bengaluru, Jul 16: Most of the sex workers in Karnataka are trying to give up the flesh trade and start a new life, but prejudice stopping them, reveals the report submitted to the government by the State-level committee that studied the problems of sex workers.
Many who responded to the questionnaire distributed by the committee, headed by actor-turned-politician Jaimala, MLC, underlined the fact that they attempted to give up their profession many times, but failed due to societal prejudices, with the police themselves proving a hurdle. According to the report of the committee, 72.1% of the women who responded to the questionnaire had attempted to give up the profession.
“Oppressed women, who got into this profession because of financial reasons, have tried to come out of it. However, their efforts met with difficulties, forcing them to continue,” said the report.
As many as 34.9% women said they understood that even if they got out, society would not accept them. Around 12.6% said the police, pimps, customers, and relatives would not allow them to come out of the profession.
A few women even said the fact that they could earn well in the profession compared to other options prompted them to continue. One woman told the committee that even when she goes out with her daughter, the police suspect her to be soliciting customers.
“They don’t believe that she is my daughter. I have not taken my daughter to a film for two years fearing police harassment,” she said.
The torture they suffer from pimps, the police, and customers prompt them to think of an alternative job. Many narrated how they are tortured by the police. They are taken to police stations often on flimsy grounds and tortured for money, they alleged.
Some officials even force them to have sex free of cost. According to the report, a few women were subjected to severe torture. Many times they are assaulted by customers. “The police refuse to register our complaints as they treat us as criminals rather than as human beings,” the women told the committee.
