Mangaluru, Jun 3: Claiming that around 75% Indians consume beef, a Muslim cleric in Karnataka has termed the union government's alleged attempt to impose nationwide ban on cow slaughter as an attack on people's right to consume the food of their choice.

K M Shaafi Saadi, general secretary of Bengaluru based Saadiya Education Foundation, was addressing a protest meet organized on Saturday by the Sunni Students Federation (SSF) in front of DC office in Manglauru in the wake of union government's recent ban on sale and purchase of cattle in animal market for slaughter.
“If they (Sangh Parivar leaders) think that only Muslims consume beef, they are ignorant people. In this country over 75% people consume beef. The government has no right to snatch the food of the common people,” he said.
He also quoted several verses of sacred scriptures of Hinduism such as Vedas and Manusmriti that apparently encouraged cow slaughter and beef consumption.
The cleric also questioned the double standard of the union government which has taken no step to stop the export of beef to foreign countries. “If cows are your mothers, then why do you allow the big companies to kill them in large numbers and export beef?” he questioned.
“Some of the beef exporters are BJP leaders. Haryana's chief minister has openly stated that he is a beef eater and that he won't support beef ban. However, some people are trying to project beef as just a food of Muslims,” he lamented.
A galaxy of sunni clerics such as Sirajuddin Saqafi, Umar Saqafi, KKM Kamil Saqafi, Sulaiman Saqafi, Haifi Yaqub Saadi were present among others. The protesters sent a memorandum to the president and prime minister of India through deputy commissioner.
