Mangalore, Dec 13: Many consider number 13 to be unlucky but for the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, 13 may turn out to be lucky because it was on December 13th that districts made a united effort to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the biggest yoga class held ever.

On Friday, approximately 75,000 students in 49 centres in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts participated in an attempt to create a Guinness Record.

Previously, such an attempt had been made in 2003 in Germany with 15,000 students approximately participating in the event. In 2005, the feat was accomplished in Gwalior, India with approximately 29,000 students. Today, almost 75,000 students in 49 centres in the two districts participated in an attempt to create a record for the largest Yoga class held simultaneously from 10 a.m. to 10.31 a.m, said Bangalore-based Shrikanth who is an advisor for persons attempting to enter the Guinness Book of World Records.

A total of 1,828 students from ten educational institutions across Mangalore taluk participated in the simultaneously held Yoga class at Sharada Vidyalaya grounds in Mangalore, in the presence of Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader and other dignitaries.

Speaking to reporters after the Yoga class at Sharada Vidyalaya, Mr Shrikanth said that the entire process was monitored and recorded through video and still cameras for documentation and evidence purposes. For creating a record, it is possible to hire an adjudicator to verify your record live and on-the-spot. However, since this attempt was taking place simultaneously in several places, hiring an adjudicator was not feasible. As an alternative, an agreement was made with Guinness Book authorities from London in April this year, who provided certain guidelines which have to be strictly adhered to for the world record to be successful, he said.

The entire process at Sharada Vidyalaya was recorded with three high-resolution video cameras – wide-angle, close-up and panning, along with two high-resolution still cameras at the scene. The entry and exit gates at each venue in the two districts were monitored with a video camera, from which the uncut video footage will be sent to the Guinness authorities, he said.

Preparations for the event had been on-going over the last 6 months, during which students were given training and instructions in yoga. During the World Record attempt, 3 students were mandatorily positioned to teach the simple yoga steps to the other participants, he said.

A total of 1,500 supervisors in both the districts were supervising the students during the feat, in addition to 100 demonstrators and 100 announcers. A total of 150 video cameras and 100 still cameras were used altogether, he added.

The verification of the attempt is expected to be made in 15-20 days, and the certification of the World Record is expected to be done in a month.

Mumbai, May 30: Former Bollywood actress Zaira Wasim has deleted her Twitter and Instagram accounts after being heavily trolled for quoting from the Quran while talking about locust attacks.

"So We sent upon them the flood and locusts and lice and frogs and blood: Signs openly self explained: but they were steeped in arrogance -- a people given to sin. --Qur'an 7:133," Zaira had tweeted.

Soon, she started receiving hateful comments from netizens who interpreted her post as a justification of the locust attacks. They felt that Zaira was suggesting that the incident is God's way of expressing wrath.

Shortly after being deluged with such comments, Zaira Wasim deleted her Twitter and Instagram accounts.

However, a section of netizens continue to attack Zaira on her Facebook page, where she put up the same post.

Commenting on the post, a user wrote: "Lady you must have taken into account of those people of JK, Kerala and elsewhere who are also suffering from the virus. Moreover the crops which are damaged by locust had no name as to who will consume them. In this hours of crisis please post something which is positive and reflects your education."

Another user shared: "So according to you, with all due respect every year on the same time period, Allah send locust to India to destroy the crops of poor farmers who are not even involve in the industrial rise, who don't use vehicle to destroy the nature, and Allah send locust only to harm the poor farmers and not the rich one who actually destroy nature."

"So those farmers who lost there fields of crops and will probably go into debt and may also commit suicide, those farmers who feed the nation, who feed you and every one, are sinners?" asked yet another user.

However, there were a few on social media who felt Zaira had done nothing wrong.

"Quoting Quranic Verse is not a crime... Why is every Indian abusing @ZairaWasimmm. She didn't mention any particular nation or religion. I request everyone please stand with #ZairaWasim. She needs our support. #ISupportZairaWasim," goes a tweet.

Indore, Jan 24: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kailash Vijayvargiya on Thursday said that he suspected that there were some Bangladeshis among construction labourers who worked at his house recently.

Their “strange” eating habits aroused suspicion about their nationality, the BJP general secretary said at a seminar in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) here.

When a new room was being added at his house recently, he found “eating habits” of some of the workers “strange” as “they were eating only `poha’ (flattened rice)”, he said.

After talking to their supervisor and the building contractor, he suspected that these workers were from Bangladesh, the BJP leader said.

When reporters questioned him later, Vijayvargiya said, “I suspected these workers were residents of Bangladesh. Two days after I became suspicious, they stopped working at my house. I have not filed any police complaint yet. I only mentioned this incident to warn people,” he said.

Speaking at the seminar, Vijayvargiya also claimed that a Bangladeshi terrorist was keeping a watch on him for the last one and a half years.

“Whenever I go out, six armed security personnel follow me. What is happening in this country? Will outside people enter and spread so much terror?” he asked.

“Don’t get confused by rumours. The CAA is in the interest of the country. This law will provide asylum to genuine refugees and identify intruders who are a threat to the country’s internal security,” he added.

Mandya, Jun 13: Degree colleges will begin classes after the lockdown is lifted and dates for examinations will be announced later, said deputy chief minister CR Ashwath Narayan on Friday.

Speaking at College of Agriculture, Mandya (VC Farm) on Friday, Ashwath Narayan said the lockdown will be completely phased out on June 30 and degree colleges will begin classes after that. “We will speak with all stakeholders to chalk out measures as to how to reopen degree colleges amidst coronavirus scare. All students must continue their studies and be prepared for exams,” he said.

Narayan said the cabinet has approved to upgrade VC Farm as a university and an ordinance will soon be promulgated in this regard. “There is a need to change the present curriculum to meet present day requirements. VC Farm will be made into a world class agriculture university and a vice chancellor will be appointed,” he said.

“Apart from traditional education, we must concentrate on skill-based education as it should create more job opportunities. We are committed to establish more skill-based educational institutes in Mandya district,” Narayan said.

Later Narayan visited Shivaragudda near Maddur and inspected 48 acres of government land which could be used for establishing skill-based education institutions. “This land was earlier used for imparting skill-based education in a collaboration with Denmark. Sir M Visvesvaraya had established skill-based institutions here in 1923 and now they have become defunct. The then prime minister of Denmark had inaugurated this century old institution. We will revive it and this will help local youths,” he said.

‘Ticket promised only to R Shankar’

When asked, Narayan said R Shankar, who quit the Congress-JD(S) coalition and joined BJP will be given a party ticket to contest the legislative council election. “Except Shankar, the high command did not promise council tickets to those who quit congress and JD(S) and joined our party. It is true that there is hectic lobbying in BJP to get tickets,” he said.
