8 dead, 14 injured in bus-tanker collision in Thane district

Thane (Maha), Jan 29: Eight persons were charred to death and 14 others were injured when a luxury bus collided with a diesel tanker near Kude village on Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway in the wee hours today.

The luxury bus was going to Ahmedabad from Pune when it collided with the tanker at Kude village within the Manor police station limits in Palghar taluka.

The accident took place around 1.45 AM. The tanker belonged to the BPCL and was carrying diesel towards Hazira in Gujarat. Due to the collision, both the vehicles immediately caught fire, police said.

As per the initial reports, all the deceased were occupants of the ill-fated bus.

"The bodies could not be identified as they are charred beyond recognition. The bodies have been sent for postmortem. The district administration is in the process of contacting the bus operator to get the names of the passengers travelling in the bus," Thane District Collector P Velrasu said here.

The administration is making all efforts to establish the identify of the victims and those identified would be handed over after due verification, he added.

The injured are undergoing treatment at Manor Rural Hospital and are said to be out of danger.

Fire engines from the nearby areas brought the fire under control, officials said, adding that the district and police authorities are supervising the relief and rescue operations. On May 29, 2013 a similar accident involving a luxury bus and tanker close to this spot had left 14 people dead and 40 injured.

Kozhikode, Jun 26: A man, who had returned from Bahrain on Thursday and has been under quarantine at his house in Villyapallai near here, has been stabbed on his arm by an unidentified person.

Police sources said the assailant, with a masked face, had ransacked the man's house by break-opening the door at midnight lat night and stabbed Lijeesh on his arm and fled from the scene.

The nearby residents took Lijeesh to a nearby hospital and was put back on quarantine.

Pilibhit, Apr 3: Two men were mauled to death by a tiger in the vicinity of Pilibhit Tiger Reserve here, an official said on Friday.

The incident happened in Richhaula Chowki of Gajraula area in the district on Thursday night when Ninder Singh (50) and his servant Dorilal (28) were sleeping on their agricultural field, Pilibhit Tiger Reserve Deputy Director Naveen Khandelwal told reporters.

The tiger also dragged them for over 500 metres, he said.

The forest department came to know about the incident when they were informed about it by Ninder's brother after which teams of police, district administration and forest department reached there.

The tiger was tranquillised on Friday by the forest department team and will be sent to Lucknow Zoo.

Mandya, Jun 14: In a tragic incident, a woman and her two children were drowned in a pond at Beeranahalli village in Nagamangala taluk of this district on Sunday.

Police said that the deceased have been identified as Geeta (40), and her two children Savita(19) and Soumya(14).

Savaitha is a degree student while Soumya was studying in 9th standard. The trio drowned in a pond where they had gone to wash their cows. The locals rushed to the spot and tried to rescue them but could not save.
