8 lose lives as pickup crashes into camel

Crashes into camelAbha, Jun 20: Nine people died and eight injured in two separate traffic accidents in the southern region on Thursday.

In the first accident, eight people lost their lives and three injured when their vehicle hit a camel in Rijal Al-Mae, Asir region, said security sources.

The early-morning crash took place on Jandalat Wadi Reem, said Ahmed Ibrahim Aseeri, spokesman of the Saudi Red Crescent Authority.

“We sent four ambulances to the accident site soon after hearing about the news and found that the accident occurred after a pickup, carrying 11, crashed into a camel,” Aseeri said. The authority’s operation room received the news of the accident at 3 a.m.

Seven passengers, including the driver, died on the spot, while the eighth died on his way to the hospital. Three passengers, with serious injuries, have been taken to Darb General Hospital for treatment, the spokesman said.

Another accident took place in Baha, killing one and injuring five, said Abdullah Al-Dabyah, spokesman of the Civil Defense in Baha.

“The victim and the injured were trapped inside the two vehicles,” he said.

Riyadh, Apr 20: Six more people have died in Saudi Arabia after contracting coronavirus as 1,122 new coronavirus cases were reported on Monday.

The Saudi health ministry said that total number of cases in the Kingdom had increased to 10,484. It also recorded 92 new recoveries, raising the total to 1,490.

The ministry said precautionary measures shall remain to limit the virus spread.

Jerusalem, May 17: The Chinese ambassador to Israel was found dead in his home north of Tel Aviv on Sunday, Israel's Foreign Ministry said.

No cause of death was given and Israeli police said it was investigating.

Du Wei, 58, was appointed envoy in February in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. He previously served as China's envoy to Ukraine.

He is survived by a wife and son, both of whom were not in Israel.

Israel enjoys good relations with China.

The ambassador's death comes just two days after he condemned comments by visiting U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who denounced Chinese investments in Israel and accused China of hiding information about the coronavirus outbreak.

Dubai, Mar 18: Emirates, one of the world's biggest international airlines, has asked pilots to take unpaid leave to help it mitigate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic that has shattered demand for global travel.

"To this end you are strongly encouraged to make use of this opportunity to volunteer for additional paid and unpaid leave," the airline said in an internal email to pilots, seen by Reuters.

Emirates earlier this month asked some staff to take unpaid leave, although at that time it was not available to pilots.
