9 Muslim' men, 4 women missing from Kasaragod, suspected to have joined IS

July 9, 2016

Kasaragod, Jul 9: At least 13 Muslims from Kasaragod district, who have been missing for a month now, are suspected to have joined the IS, a terror group based in Middle East.

ISTheir relatives said they had received messages from them that they had reached their final destination — the Caliphate' that the IS projects to establish. They are suspected to have gone in groups via Dubai or Sri Lanka.

“Those missing include nine men, four of their wives, a child and an infant. Three of the women are pregnant. One of the missing is the manager of a local school; he and his wife had recently converted to Islam. All are in their 20s,” said Abdul Salam from Padanna.

His nephew, Haseesudeen, 23, is also suspected to be part of this group. State and Central intelligence agencies have begun probing the veracity of this information.

Kasaragod's CPI (M) MP P. Karunakaran, Trikkarippur's MLA K. Rajagopal and Kasaragod district panchayat member V.P.P. Mustafa called on CM Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday.

Couple from Palakkad missing

Kasaragod MP P. Karunakaran, who brought the issue of the 13 missing Kerala Muslims to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's attention said: This is serious. I submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister. I have also messaged Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh urging him to take up this issue. Besides these people from Kasargod, a couple from Palakkad have also gone missing now.”

A senior intelligence officer, who confirmed being privy to this information, however declined to confirm the apprehensions about the IS link.

“We can't confirm that they have indeed joined the IS. There have been many complaints about youths who went to the Gulf having gone missing. We can't just assume that they all have joined the IS, though Kerala is a fertile ground for radicalisation,” he said.

When contacted State Police Chief Loknath Behera said there was no “actionable intelligence.”

“The information is not right. I spoke to the SP Kasaragod. The police have no such information as of now,” he said.

But Abdul Salam, whose nephew is suspected to be in the missing group of 13, and who is bringing together the families at Padanna and Trikkarippur, said that many of these youths had frequented radical training programmes at a farm house at Tirur in Malappuram.

“Haseesudeen used to say that he wanted to study religion in Egypt. We suspect that there could be more youths from the State who went that way,” he said.

Incidentally, the Union government had alerted Kerala that a dormant radical module with links to Islamic State militia may plan to recruit fighters for strife-torn Syria and Iraq.

New Delhi, Mar 19: Senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes on Wednesday extolled the virtues of 'gaumutra' and shared an anecdote about a man claiming to have cured his cancer by drinking cow urine to drive his point home.

Participating in a debate in Rajya Sabha on two bills for setting up national commissions for homoeopathy and Indian systems of medicine, the former Union minister said, "My extreme friend Jairam Ramesh pulls my leg, when I talk of 'gaumutra'."

Sharing an anecdote, Fernandes said once during a visit to an ashram near Meerut he had met a person who claimed to have cured his cancer by drinking 'gaumutra'.

Many BJP leaders have earlier spoken about the healing power of 'gaumutra'. The Congress has reacted sharply to such remarks.

He also praised the virtues of the Indian systems of medicine. He said when he had severe pain in knee joint and doctors had suggested for replacement surgery. However, he refused and started doing 'Vajrasana'.

"I started Vajrasana, practising yoga, and today I am able to do wrestling without any difficulty," the septuagenarian leader said.

"When (former) prime minister (Atal Bihari) Vajypee ji had a knee surgery, I thought if I had known him earlier, I would have definitely gone to him and ask him to follow 'Vajrasan' and it could have been cured," he said.

He also claimed to have met a person in US aged around 104 years and moving swiftly as a young man.

"Yoga is our wealth. If you practise yoga, may be our budget cost of health can be reduced by 50 per cent. It's way of life," he said.

"Our own Indian systems of medicine will provide a lot of reliefs even before going to a doctor," he said.

Though Fernandes supported the bills but raised objection over the exclusion of yoga and naturopathy.

"I would urge the minister either to amend the bill or bring an assurance that it will bring a separate legislation to cover yoga and naturopathy," he said.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 9: Malls, restaurants and places of worship opened in Kerala on Tuesday morning after over two-and half months of Coronavirus induced lockdown. There were very few visitors in the malls and restaurants in the early hours and people preferred takeaways in eateries.

Various temples, including the famous Lord Krishna temple at Guruvayoor, a few churches and mosques opened in the state for the devotees. The Guruvayur shrine opened at 9.30 am and around 150 people, who had booked through virtual queue system, offered prayers.

Devotees wearing masks were seen standing adhering to the social distance norm. A faithful at the guruvayur temple said he had booked for darshan on Sunday and was happy to be offering worship after a long gap. "This is a realisation of a dream", he said.

In the state capital while the famed Lord Padmanabha swamy, Pazhavanangadi Ganapathy and Attukal Bhagavathy temples remained shut, the SreekanteshwaraShiva shrine and Lord Hanuman temple near the state assembly were among those which opened for darshan. The names, age and other details of the worshippers are also being collected by the temple authorities before letting people in. Another devotee said it was very painful not to go to the temple and expressed happiness over reopening of the shrines.

The virtual queue booking for devotees to offer worship at the hill shrine of Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala would commence from Wednesday. Devotees from other states have to produce a Covid-19 negative certificate while booking, sources in the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), administers the temple, said.

The Ayyappa shrine would open from June 14 to 28 for the five day monthly pooja and temple festival and only 10 people would be allowed inside the shrine at a time, sources said.

Most of the over 1,200 temples under the TDB, have opened while those under the Nair Service Society (NSS), an organisation of the Nair community and few other shrines were shut. The state government, which had come under attack from the BJP and Hindu Aikya vedi for opening the temples in a "hasty manner" has maintained that the decision was taken in line with the Centre's Unlock-1 guidelines and said those opposing the move had earlier wanted devotees to be allowed into the shrines.

As per the centre's Standard Operating Procedures, social distancing should be followed in all the places of worship and devotees should wear face mask are among other precautions in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those above 65 and children below 10 years would not be allowed in places of worship, distribution of food, refreshments and offertory blessings (prasadams), sandalwood paste or ashes should be avoided. Thermal scanners to check body temperatures, sanitiisers, arrangements for washing hands, were all provided in the temples and other places of worship which opened this morning, In churches in the state capital, Kochi and Kozhikode, allowedthe faithful inside after disinfecting the place.

The orthodox church synod is being held on Tuesday which will take a decision on whether or not to open their places of worship. Few mosques were also open in some places.

Manglauru, Jun 1: The southwest monsoon has made an onset over Kerala, marking the commencement of the four-month long rainfall season, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday.

"The southwest monsoon has made an onset over Kerala," IMD director general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.

The four-month monsoon season from June to September accounts for 75 per cent of rainfall in the country.

Private forecaster Skymet Weather on May 30 had declared arrival of monsoon, but the IMD had differed, saying conditions were not ripe then for such an announcement.

Orange alert

Meanwhile, coastal Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district, which is receiving sporadic rains for past couple of days, is on orange alert.

Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh declared the orange alert following IMD’s prediction of heavy rainfall in the region.
