Aamir was to talk about peace on earth at 'Make in India Week'

Mumbai, Feb 15: Aamir Khan, who was earlier at the centre of a controversy over his comments on intolerance, was to recite a poem about peace at the cultural event as part of 'Make in India' meet where a fire broke out. Amir Khan 2

"He was going to recite the famous Marathi poem 'Pasayadan'...written in the 13th century by Sant Dnyaneshwar," a source said.

"After finishing his commentary on the Bhagwad ita, Sant Dnyaneshwar wrote Pasayadan as a prayer," he said. The fire engulfed the stage at a cultural event held at Girgaum Chowpatty seafront here last night.

A string of film celebrities and political leaders were present as part of the high-profile 'Make in India' investment meet but there were no casualties.

All the VVIPs including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan were safely evacuated to safer areas. The programme was later called-off following the incident.

Aamir had earlier attended a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Saturday night. The "Ghajini" star had kicked up a controversy last year by saying he has been "alarmed" by a number of incidents and his wife Kiran Rao even suggested that they should probably leave India.

His comments evoked sharp criticism from ruling BJP and also the NDA government. Later, the 50-year-old actor's contract as brand ambassador for the government's Incredible India campaign was not renewed by the Tourism Ministry.

BJP Veteran LK Advani Breaks Down While Watching Shikara

New Delhi, Feb 9: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani got emotional while watching the movie "Shikara: The Untold Story Of Kashmiri Pandits". It is a Hindi-language period film produced and directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, based on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from Kashmir.

In a video clip, the political veteran is seen trying to hold back his tears at the end of the film while Mr Chopra rushes to console him. Other people around them were also seen getting emotional and congratulating the filmmaker for the movie.

"Shikara" is about how Kashmiri Pandits were forced to flee from their houses in the Kashmir Valley in early 1990, in the wake of insurgency. The filmmaker said the film showcases how Kashmiri Pandits rebuilt their lives in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Featuring Aadil Khan and Sadia, Shikara released on February 7. Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who is from Kashmir, dedicates his movie to his mother, who died in 2007.

Veteran Bollywood actor-comedian Jagdeep dies at 81

Mumbai, Jul 8: Veteran Actor-comedian Jagdeep, best known for his role as Soorma Bhopali in "Sholay", died on Wednesday at his residence. He was 81.

The actor, whose real name is Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri, was not keeping well. "He passed away at 8: 30 pm at his residence in Bandra. He was not keeping well due to age related issues," producer Mehmood Ali, a close family friend, told news agency.

Jagdeep appeared in around 400 films but it is his role as Soorma Bhopali in 1975 film "Sholay" that is etched in audiences' minds even today. He also played memorable roles in "Purana Mandir" and in "Andaz Apna Apna" as Salman Khan's father.

Better known by his stage name Jagdeep, the actor also directed the movie "Soorma Bhopali" with his character as the protagonist. He is survived by two sons - Javed and Naved.

Singer S P Balasubrahmanyam tests positive for COVID-19

New Delhi, Aug 5: Playback singer S P Balasubrahmanyam on Wednesday confirmed testing positive for COVID-19 with 'mild' symptoms.

The 74-year-old musician shared the information through a video message posted on his official Facebook page.

In the video, the singer detailed about having a little "discomfort" for two days, stating he had chest congestion along with cold and on-off fever, which led him to get tested for the virus.

However, he also mentioned that he could have stayed at home in self-quarantine, as advised, but did not want to put his family in danger, and hence got admitted by his own choice, to recover quickly.

"I am in good hand, I am in good health. Nobody has to worry about this. The fever has subsided, and in two days I'll be discharged and I'll be home. Thanks for the concern," he said in the video message.
