AAP asks Ravi Shankar Prasad to resign over ‘Reliance link’

December 19, 2014

New Delhi, Dec 19: The Aam Aadmi Party alleged impropriety and conflict of interest on the part of Union Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and former UPA minister Manish Tewari in connection with Reliance Industries.

Alleging that Prasad’s association with the corporate group prevented him from issuing a notice to Reliance Jio on the 4G issue, the party demanded the Union Minister’s resignation.rsprasad

Prasad and Tiwari refuted the allegations and called them baseless. “We have documents that show direct conflict of interest and impropriety in conduct of a current and a former cabinet minister,” senior AAP leader Yogendra Yadav said. The AAP had with them invoices worth Rs 84 lakh raised by Prasad on Fine Tech Corporation Private Limited, a company associated with the Reliance group, between April 2013 to March 2014.

Senior AAP leader Prashant Bhushan alleged that Prasad has been receiving payment from the company “in the form of retainership fee” which “appears to be a token of gratification being offered”.

The party also pointed out that before becoming a union minister, Prasad was a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee from March 2011 onwards, examining matters relating to allocation and pricing of telecom licences and spectrum.

“Is the current Minister for Telecom (Ravi Shankar Prasad) not sitting over a notice that needs to be issued to Reliance Jio with respect to the 4G case? Why is the Minister for Telecom Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad sitting over this notice for the past three months and not allowing DoT’s Access Service Division to issue notice to Reliance?” the AAP asked in a statement.

According to a statement by Prasad’s office: “The allegation of the AAP is completely false and misleading… Mr Prasad has never given any advice or appeared for the Reliance Industries.”

The statement also said that before becoming a minister, Prasad had terminated all his professional relationships.

In the case of former telecom minister Manish Tewari, the AAP said that he was in a retainership agreement with the RIL even during his tenure as a union minister.

Alleging that Tewari’s retainership contract expired on June 30, 2012, he got the contract extended tell June 30, 2015. Pointing out that Tewari was also a member of JPC which probed the 2G telecom scam, Bhushan said, “Such former ministers speak in Parliament on issues of interest to these companies (Reliance group).”

According to Tewari’s office, he was sworn in as a minister on October 28, 2012 and took charge on the October 29 and on his request his licence to practice was suspended by the Bar Council the next day. “On the November 1, 2012, we wrote to Reliance Industries Ltd. terminating the Legal Relationship with immediate effect and Reliance Industries acknowledged the termination of the Legal Relationship vide letter dated November 3, 2012,” the statement read.

New Delhi, May 13: Prime Minister Narendra on Tuesday announced Rs 20 lakh crore special economic package for the country to be 'self-reliant' and deal with COVID-19.

"I announce a special economic package today. This will play an important role in the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan.' The announcements made by the government over COVID, decisions of RBI and today's package totals to Rs 20 lakh crore. This is 10 per cent of India's GDP," said Prime Minister Modi in his address to the nation. The Prime Minister said that humanity would not accept defeat from the coronavirus but the people have to stay safe and move forward.

"We had never seen or heard about such a crisis ever before. This is definitely unimaginable for mankind. It is unprecedented. But humanity will not accept defeat from this virus. We have to not only protect ourselves but also move forward," he said.

Talking about the gravity of the virus, Modi said: "It has been four months the world is fighting COVID-19. More than 42 lakh people from different countries have been infected by COVID-19. More than 2.75 lakh people have lost their lives due to the virus. In India too many families have lost their dear ones, I express my condolences to them."

"Today when the entire world is in crisis, we will have to further firm our resolve," he added.

The Prime Minister on Monday held a video conference meeting with Chief Ministers of all states to discuss the road ahead in India's fight against COVID-19 and noted that he was of the firm view that measures needed during the third phase of lockdown will not be needed in the fourth phase.

Prime Minister Modi had said the need was to reduce the transmission rate of the disease and to increase public activity gradually while adhering to all the guidelines and efforts to be made towards achieving both these objectives.

The phase three of the lockdown is coming to an end on May 17.

Jammu, Apr 7: Old habits will just no longer do, a Jammu and Kashmir administration employee found to his dismay on Tuesday when he was sent to a quarantine centre for blowing his nose and spitting on the road.

The man, who works as an accountant in the civil secretariat here, had gone to meet a relative in Paloura on the outskirts of the city when he was nabbed, officials said.

The neighbours panicked when they saw him blowing his nose and immediately called the police, which rushed to the spot with a medical team and a magistrate, they said.

He was immediately taken to a quarantine facility set up at the IIT hostel in the Janipur area and his samples taken for a coronavirus test.

Given the high levels of anxiety over the spread of COVID-19, news of his being taken by police started circulating widely. There were also some WhatsApp messages that he was trying to deliberately spread the infection and was arrested by police.

However, police officials said they had not arrested him and merely put him in a quarantine centre. It was not clear how long he would be in the centre.

The employee told police officials he had an itch in his nose and nothing more.

"Be responsible citizens and stop spreading rumours or fake news," an official said, requesting people to be more responsible.

Amaravati, Mar 28: The state governments of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka carried out a joint quarantine operation to help over a thousand migrant labourers from various districts of Andhra Pradesh.
The Andhra Pradesh administration received the information that 1,334 migrant labourers were trying to return to the state after obtaining passes from the Deputy Director of Fisheries in Mangalore, Karnataka.
The labourers, according to a press release by the Andhra Pradesh government, were headed towards the Nangili Toll Plaza in Kolar district, from where they would enter the state to return to their native places.
"The Chittoor Collector, Superintendent of Police and Sub-Collector rushed to the spot to coordinate with their counterparts from Kolar, Karnataka. The migrant workers were not permitted to enter AP due to the lockdown and the guidelines of the Union as well as state government," according to the release.
Instead, both the governments decided to initiate a joint quarantine operation in Kolar while taking precautionary measures to ensure that none of the labourers are carriers of the COVID-19 infection.
The Andhra government also reassured the Kolar administration that it will provide doctors, healthcare and all other facilities. It has also issued directions for logistical support, food, water, transport to take the labourers to quarantine facility, and medical team, consisting of 12 doctors, 22 supervisors and other staff, to be provided.
While the Prime Minister had imposed a nationwide lockdown, including the suspension of inter-state travel to prevent the spread of coronavirus, migrant workers and labourers around the country have started returning back to their native places fearing joblessness and cash crunch.
Andhra Pradesh as of Saturday 9:30 am, had 14 confirmed cases of coronavirus while Karnataka's count stood at 55, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
