AAP founder member Ilyas Azmi quits party, says Kejriwal is ‘autocratic’

May 3, 2016

New Delhi, May 3: Aam Aadmi Party founder member and former MP Ilyas Azmi on Monday quit the party citing “lack of inner democracy” in the organisation and convener Arvind Kejriwal’s “autocratic style of functioning”, almost a week after he was dropped from party’s top decision-making bodies.

AAPAzmi accused Kejriwal of indulging in caste and community-based politics and of ignoring Muslims and people from backward classes.

“There is no inner democracy in the party. It has been reduced to one man’s property,” Azmi said.

“Also, Muslims and people from backward classes are completely being ignored. There is hardly any Muslim representation in AAP. Kejriwal is appointing people of his own community to key posts in the government. He is openly giving preference to people of his own community in the party too,” he claimed.

He said he was also against the removal of lawyer Prashant Bhushan and psephologist-turned-politician Yogendra Yadav from the party.

Asserting that AAP was founded on principles which were against caste and community politics, Azmi said, “But now AAP itself is indulging in community politics even more than Mulayam Singh Yadav so I stopped participating in party’s activities.”

A former BSP MP, Azmi was one of the founder members of the party. In a rejig, Azmi was dropped from both the National Executive and Political Affairs Committee of the party.

He also alleged that rules were not followed during the rejig and decisions on appointments were made well in advance.

“I had left Mayawati’s BSP because she was running it like a one-person party but then here even Kejriwal is doing the same. So I have no other option but to leave it,” he said.

Azmi also attacked the BJP-led central government likening it to the Nazi regime, and said, “Today, a condition is being created in the country similar to what Hitler had created in Germany in 1934-35. Earlier, the governments were being run from 7, Race Course, they are now operated from Nagpur.”

Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kejriwal, Azmi said, “dictatorship cannot be replaced by another dictatorship.”

Azmi, however, was full of praise for JD(U) leader and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar.

“I have reached a conclusion that at this point of time Nitish Kumar is the only person in the country who believes in democracy and human values,” he said.

Aug 3: Iqbal Ansari, who was a litigant in the Ayodhya land dispute case, has decided to gift a 'Ram nami' stole and a copy of the Ramcharitmanas to Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he attends the bhoomi pujan ceremony for the Ram temple here on Wednesday.

"Yes, I have received the invitation from Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust for the bhoomi pujan ceremony. I will certainly attend it. The dispute is over now after the court's verdict," Ansari, 69, told .

"Our Prime Minister is coming. I will meet him and give him a 'Ramnami' stole (with Ram's name written on it) and Ramcharitmanas as a present," Ansari said.

His father Hashim Ansari, the oldest litigant in the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi land dispute case, died at the age of 95 in 2016 after which the son started pursuing the case in the court.

Talking about Wednesday's ground-breaking ceremony to mark the beginning of the construction of a grand Ram temple here, Ansari said, "I belong to Ayodhya. All this (temple's construction) will change the fate of Ayodhya. We all want our child to get better opportunities".

He further said, "I respect sadhus and saints. I am happy to have received the invitation for the ceremony. I think it is Lord Ram's will that I attend it".

When asked what he would have done had the court decided the case in his favour, Ansari said he had wanted the construction of a school and a hospital on the disputed land.

"I feel the city needs development. The future of our children should be safe and secure and they should get employment. Dispute in the name of religion should end now and we should let the city witness a new beginning," he said.

The Supreme Court had in November last year paved the way for the construction of a Ram temple by a Trust at the disputed site of the Babri Masjid's demolition in Ayodhya, and directed the Centre to allot an alternative 5-acre plot to the Sunni Waqf Board for building a new mosque at a "prominent" place in the holy town in Uttar Pradesh.

The state government has allotted a five-acre land in Dhannipur village in Sohaval Tehsil of Ayodhya for the mosque's construction.

Bhopal, Jul 7: Anil Mishra, personal assistant to BJP Rajya Sabha MP Jyotiraditya Scindia, has tested positive.

He has been accompanying Scindia throughout his tours post-corona infection.

His contact trail is longer than that of Scindia. He has been in touch with Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Mishra was present during Scindia's meetings with the MLAs and the swearing in ceremony of the MP ministry on July 2.

BJP sources say there is concern over the possible list of people who will be put in isolation to check the spread of the virus.
